Bees, and experiences to care for the environment Royal Planet shares

Bees, and experiences to care for the environment Royal Planet shares

When in 2021 we established Royal Planet, our sustainability pillar at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, we were clear that part of our goal would be to enhance our guests' experience by offering them amenities and activities focused on environmental conservation, fair trade and other benefits that have been gradually added to this pillar.

Another of the reasons why we started this ambitious project was due to the appeal of the United Nations which in 2015, when presenting the objectives of the 2030 agenda , named 17 different goals to be achieved in a period of 15 years.

What are the 17 United Nations goals in its 2030 agenda?

  1. End of poverty

  2. Zero hunger

  3. Health and welfare

  4. Quality education

  5. Gender equality

  6. Clean water and sanitation

  7. Affordable and clean energy

  8. Decent work and economic growth

  9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

  10. Reducing inequalities

  11. Sustainable cities and communities

  12. Responsible production and consumption

  13. Climate action

  14. Underwater life

  15. Life of terrestrial ecosystems

  16. Peace, justice and strong institutions

  17. Partnerships to achieve the goals

During the time that Royal Planet has operated within our hotels under the goals of the 2030 agenda we have managed working and consolidating concrete actions. An example of these actions is related to points 11 and 12, concerning support for sustainable communities, responsible production and consumption, respectively.

This has been possible thanks to the work and conservation of the melipona bee by the Muuch Kaab community and Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, but do you know why bees are so important to the world?

Read on to learn more.

Why are bees so important to the world?

  1. Because of their pollination process

Bees are key pollinators for many plants, including many food crops. Without bees, many plants would not be able to reproduce, which would lead to a significant decrease in food production.
  2. For their contribution to human nutrition

A large number of agricultural crops depend on bee pollination to produce fruits, vegetables and nuts. This has a direct impact on food security and the availability of food For people around the world
  3. For their economical role

Pollination by bees has significant economic value. Furthermore, the production of honey, wax and other bee products generates income for local communities too.
  4. For their contribution to the ecological balance

Bees are part of food chains. Their disappearance or decrease could have domino effects on ecosystems affecting other animal and plant species.

Which actions does Park Royal Hotels & Resorts take to conserve bees and the planet?

If you have stayed at our hotels in Mexico you may remember the small amenity bottles containing shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion, well, since 2023, this practice is behind as we replaced these bottles, made of single-use plastic, with dispensers!

But the only thing we did not replace were the high quality products made by the Mayan women's community Muuch Kaab, who as we mentioned before, elaborate their products from melipona bee honey, thanks to which the benefit occurs on both sides; they maintain the self-management of their communities , while we by acquiring their products, spoil our guests with the organic benefits of the honey.

On the other hand, and talking about improvements in your experience when arriving to your room at Grand Park Royal Cancun, Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta, Grand Park Royal Cozumel or Park Royal Beach Cancun, you will find 2 reusable thermos flasks that you can refill as many times as you want in the different water stations we have set up, which helps the planet to stop the massive production of water bottles.

When it comes to entertainment, our actions are not far behind, since our offer in this area has evolved.

A perfect example of this is what will happen during the next ECODAY, (June 5, 2024), in the different hotels of our chain. at Park Royal Beach Huatulco we will organize an eco-tour, in which we will visit a mangrove swamp where we will talk about its importance for the ecosystems and its conservation, while at Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta, we will carry out a small reforestation campaign with all those guests interested in environmental care. At Grand Park Royal Cozumel, we will make an incredible dream catcher made from recycled material.

If, like us, you are also committed to the planet, we invite you to get to know us and give us the opportunity to participate with you in all these small events. Our consumption decisions impact the planet. Let's live responsibly and coexist together in harmony.

What is celebrated on the 4th of July in the United States?

The Fourth of July marks the moment when the Thirteen Colonies declared their separation from British colonial rule, bravely affirming their inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as stated in the U.S. Constitution. Since then, this date has been celebrated throughout the country.
Beyond fun and entertainment, the 4th of July is a reminder of the fundamental values that unite Americans: freedom, equality and opportunity. This date is a chance to remember the sacrifice and courage of those who fought for independence, as well as to renew the commitment to the ideals that define this nation.

In addition, we will have a colorful photo opportunity to show off your visit to Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta on your social networks! And, at 2:00 p.m. we will have a BBQ with live music and the participation of a famous character that you can't miss.
At night, we will host a very special dinner show which will be themed with special elements of the date and live music. And to close with a flourish, we will have one more surprise for all our guests.
This 4th of July , while the skies are bursting with colors and flags are waving proudly, we want you no matter where you visit us from, to remember the values of freedom and democracy that the American nation has historically defended. We at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts will inspire your stay by honoring this date.

The longest day of the year from Puerto Vallarta

The longest day of the year from Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, with its coastal charm and rich Mexican culture, is the perfect setting to celebrate the summer solstice. In this beautiful Mexican Pacific destination, ancestral traditions intertwine with modernity, creating a unique atmosphere where spirituality and connection with nature are a fundamental part of the experience.

The summer solstice is the magical moment when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky and has been celebrated and revered by ancient cultures around the worldAmong these cultures are the Maya and the Huichol, whose traditions and beliefs deeply rooted in nature give them a deep respect for this celestial event.

For the Maya, one of the most advanced civilizations in Mesoamerica, the summer solstice marked the beginning of a new cycle in their sacred calendar. It was a time of celebration and reflection, when the sun god, Kinich Ahau, was honored and ceremonies were performed to attract fertility and abundance to the land. The Maya were masters in the observation of the stars, and the summer solstice was crucial in their world vision, as it marked the moment when the sun began its journey back to the south, symbolizing rebirth, and renewal.

On the other hand, The Huicholes , an indigenous people of Mexico known for their deep bond with nature and their sacred rituals with peyote, also attach great importance to the summer solstice. For the Huicholes, this event marks the moment when the sun reaches its maximum strength and energy, flooding the earth with its vital light. It is a moment of connection with the cosmos and of gratitude for the gifts received from mother earth.

Puerto Vallarta is marked by the influence of the pre-Hispanic peoples of the region, such as the Mayas. Although geographically distant, the Mayas shared with the Huicholes a deep reverence for the sun and its cycles.

Welcome the summer on beaches full of cosmic energy.

Today, this tourist destination attracts travelers from all over the world in search of sun, beach, and adventure. However, beyond its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife, offers a holistic experience that invites visitors to reconnect with themselves and the nature that surrounds them, this connection is evident in every corner.

For those who wish to immerse themselves in the magic of the summer solstice, Puerto Vallarta offers a unique opportunity. With its beautiful landscapes and rich culture, you can enjoy an extraordinary moment. You can make this a complete experience at Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta , which offers a variety of activities designed to connect body, mind, and spirit, from temazcal ceremonies to yoga classes at sunrise.

However, the highlight of these celebrations is undoubtedly the Summer Festival , an event that gathers guests in a celebration full of life, music, and fun. Now, if your thing is just to rest and live a summer solstice full of peace, Park Royal Homestay Los Tules Puerto Vallarta is the ideal place for you, since this magical complex with beautiful gardens invites you to have a special connection with nature.

Wellness: a lifestyle even on vacation

Wellness: a lifestyle even on vacation

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we often forget the importance of taking care of our health and well-being. In response to these pressures, the concept of wellness was built as a lifestyle.

Achieving comprehensive well-being is one of the goals of more and more people. Since ancient Greece, the idea of a “healthy mind in a healthy body” was recognized. The pressures and speed of everyday dynamics can keep us from this path of plenitude; however, wellness offers us activities and dynamics To get back on it

On June 8th, an international event that seeks to spread this life proposal to more people takes place, Global Wellness Day ,Park Royal Hotels & Resorts will be part of it, to invite our guests to experience a wellness vacation. In this blog we tell you more about what will happen this day.

What does wellness mean and how is it achieved?

The concept of wellness began to be used in the United States around the seventies. It means an active process of awareness and decisions towards a healthy and full life. The The World Health Organization (WHO) defines it as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not simply the absence of infirmity or disease.” .

The idea grew so much that today there is the Global Wellness Institute, which gives us another specific definition of this thought: “the active search for activities, options and lifestyles that lead to a state of comprehensive health.”

Now it is known as a path of constant search to achieve optimal health, a healthy balance between emotional and physical care, but without forcing it.

Global Wellness Day: integrating actions into daily life

Vacations offer us the perfect opportunity to disconnect from stress and adopt a more conscious approach to our well-being. Imagine starting your day with the soft sound of waves crashing on the shore, while you immerse yourself in a relaxing yoga session on the beach; or benefit from the first rays of sun to dance to the rhythm of tropical sounds in a Zumba class.

After a revitalizing morning, what better way to continue your day of wellness than with a relaxing walk? Not before having participated in some healthy food tasting and having refreshed yourself with a detox juice, or fresh seasonal fruits. During an idyllic seaside setting, you can allow yourself to let go of all thoughts and worries.

As the sun slowly slides across the sky, it's the perfect time to practice meditation by the sea. With the waves as a musical background, you can immerse yourself in a state of peace and tranquility, allowing your mind to free itself from worries and intrusive thoughts.

These experiences and more activities focused on care and well-being can be found at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts , which joins the international personal care movement on Global Wellness Day. By making wellness a lifestyle during your vacation, you not only give yourself moments of peace and relaxation, but you also invest in your long-term health and happiness.

Take care of our environment, love the planet

The environment in which we, as humans, develop is also part of this comprehensive well-being that wellness seek. A few days before Global Wellness Day, we commemorated the World Environment Day, on June 5th, a date on which we raise awareness of the importance of protecting the planet and its natural resources.
One way to connect with nature can be through a family beach cleaning day, to remind us of the importance of keeping its beauty as crystal clear as possible. Also, by learning how to grow a plant, and being part of the irrigation of an urban garden, the whole family will be able to feel one again with the earth and remember the importance of caring for it.

Caring for the environment and our own health is an element that, the earlier in life it is acquired as a habit, the more likely it will last throughout it. At Park Royal Hotels & Resorts we have prepared activities that can help create this awareness of well-being and care in the little ones. With recycling crafts, origami making or a recycled painting workshop, the Funtastic Team conveys the importance of these actions.

We invite you to learn more about this way of life that, we are sure, will lead you down paths of relaxation. Allow yourself to disconnect from stress and nourish your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Prepare to return to your daily routine with a renewed sense of vitality and energy that can help you build new habits that your body, mind, and spirit will thank you for.

What to see and do in Coba: a great Mayan city

What to see and do in Coba: a great Mayan city

Get to know the past on an unforgettable trip to the golden age of the Mayans. Welcome to the majesty of Coba! The ancient Mayan city hidden in the jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) and founded between 500 and 900 AD.

Coba is located in the state of Quintana Roo, halfway between Tulum and Valladolid. Surrounded by dense tropical jungle and 5 lakes (hence its well-known name as "the city of 5 lakes"), the Mayan city emerges as a majestic testimony of the greatness of the civilization that inhabited it, in fact, it was the largest Mayan city in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula.

We open its doors to embark on a spectacular tour through the majestic Mayan ruins and the magical crystalline cenotes, immersing ourselves in the historical and natural wealth that this destination has to offer.

Archaeological zone of Coba

It is one of the most visited sites in Mexico, due to its location and its unrestored architectural complexes, where the Mayan past comes to life. In this archaeological complex is the Nohoch Mul Pyramid (which is the highest in the Yucatan Peninsula and the second largest in Mayan history, with 42 meters high), the enigmatic Ovan Temple (Xaibé), the serenity of La Iglesia, the energy of the Ball Games, and the fascinating Mayan wall paintings. Each structure tells a unique story of this civilization, unraveling its secrets as we walk among its vestiges.

The Pyramid of Nohoch Mul

In the impressive landscape of Coba stands imposing Nohoch Mul, the pyramid that rises majestically to offer us a unique vision of the ancient city of Coba and its natural environment. It is the tallest ceremonial building in the Yucatan Peninsula and the second in Mayan history, at 42 meters high.

It is the only pyramid you can climb in this archaeological complex. Ascending its steps (120 no more and no less) is to enter the greatness of the Mayan civilization, an experience that fuses history, nature and spirituality. From the heights, the panoramic perspectives of the exuberant Yucatecan jungle will envelop you.

Nohoch Mul is not just a stone structure, it is a tangible connection to the splendor of the Mayan civilization. Each of its blocks tells an ancient story and as you ascend you immerse yourself in the vision and wisdom that the Mayans captured in this colossal building.

Ovan Temple (Xaibé) or The Observatory

In the heart of Coba is the Ovan Temple, also known as Xaibé or The Observatory, an astronomical observatory that shows the deep mathematical and astronomical knowledge of the ancient Mayan civilization. It is a tangible testimony of the Mayan mastery in observing the sky and a symbol of the harmony that this culture sought between the Earth and the cosmos.

Its rounded design reflects an advanced understanding of celestial movements and astronomical cycles. It exemplifies that the Mayans aligned their buildings with the sky. As you explore the Xaibé Temple, try to imagine the ancient Mayans using this observatory to record significant astronomical events, marking time and celebrating the eternal dance of the stars.

Image of the pyramid known as Xaibé or The Observatory

La Iglesia

This architectural complex is the second tallest in Coba, at 24 meters high. Every architectural detail of La Iglesia (The Church) tells a story of devotion and connection with the divine. From the intricate sculptures to the stone carvings, each element reveals the Mayan commitment to their ceremonial and religious practices.

As you walk around La Iglesia, you will feel how spirituality permeates the air, you will imagine the rituals that took place in this sacred area and you will connect with the energy that persists in each rock.

Ball Games

Let's transport ourselves to the past and relive the excitement of the ancient Mayan Ball Games (played since 1400 BC) on the ceremonial field of Coba. Here the game transcended the physical to become a ritual and spiritual act.

We invite you to imagine the grandeur of this field, where competitions were held that went beyond mere athletic prowess. The Ball Games were a manifestation of the worldview of this civilization, where sport was mixed with the sacred as an offering to the gods.

Group of Paintings

We now enter the well-known Group of Paintings in Coba, where the walls bear witness to the fascinating stories of the daily life and beliefs of the Mayans. The artists of this civilization captured their experiences and beliefs with exceptional mastery.

It is not only a set of murals, but it is an open-air museum that presents a rich collection of artistic expressions. You will also find the Templo de las Pinturas (Temple of Paintings), a well-preserved building both inside and out. Each brush stroke, made with natural pigments, tells a story.

Practical Information: how much does the entrance to Coba cost and its schedule?

Enjoying the wonders of Coba has a cost that is worth every peso. Admission gives you access to extraordinary cultural heritage. Please note that the cost may vary, so it is advisable to check the updated rates before your visit.

  • Buy your tickets in advance. Avoid setbacks and secure your entry by purchasing your tickets in advance. Some times of the year may have higher demand, so get ahead!

  • Choose the right time of day. Do you prefer the freshness of the morning or the magical atmosphere at dusk? Adjust your visit to enjoy Coba at the time of day that most appeals to you.

History of the Mayan Ruins of Coba

It is believed that Coba was founded in the late preclassic period and reached its peak between 600 and 900 AD. Strategically located between two bodies of water, this Mayan city flourished as a commercial and cultural center.

During the classical period, Coba became a regional power. Its unique architecture, with the impressive Nohoch Mul Pyramid as its centerpiece, highlights the advanced urban planning of the Mayans. As the classical period drew to a close, Coba experienced a gradual decline. Although the exact reason for its abandonment is not completely clear, it is suggested that factors such as political conflicts and environmental changes could have contributed.

The rediscovery of Coba in the 19th century by explorers and archaeologists, has allowed a deeper understanding of its history. Each excavation reveals new secrets, from ancient ceremonial structures to artifacts that shed light on the daily lives of the Mayans.

Magical lakes and cenotes in Coba

Coba goes beyond history. We invite you to discover the natural jewels of the Mayan Jungle, such as the freshness of the lakes that surround the archaeological complex, as well as the cenotes of San Juan de Dios, Multun-Ha, Choo-Ha and Tamcach-Ha. These crystalline oases offer not only a refreshing escape, but also a glimpse into the stunning natural beauty that surrounds this archaeological treasure.

Cenotes of San Juan de Dios

Known as they are in the town of San Juan de Dios, these two cenotes are known by their names: Muul’ich Ts’on’ot and the Xamán cave. They are part of the underground network of rivers and caverns that characterizes the Yucatan Peninsula. The purity of the water invites you to enjoy a refreshing dip while you marvel at the visibility that characterizes these magical places.

Although the celebration was established on May 8th, 1916, in Tantoyuca, Veracruz, this day still brings joy to the little ones.

The General Law on the Rights of Girls, Boys and Adolescents (published on December 4th, 2014), acknowledges them as holders of their rights, in its Article 13th, it states that they have the right to relax, to leisure, and play, as well as to freely participate in cultural, sports and artistic activities, as fundamental elements of their development and growth.

Day turns to night in Mazatlán: Total Eclipse

Day turns to night in Mazatlán: Total Eclipse

This coming April 8th, 2024, an impressive astronomical event will occur. It’ll be visible in much of North America, but the main host will be the beautiful coasts of Mazatlan, in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa.

In Mexico, according to scientists, there will be ideal and appropriate climatic conditions to observe this total solar eclipse. The geographical coordinates of this area of the country will concur with the moment in which the total phase will be at its maximum point on the longest duration.

Between two and five solar eclipses occur throughout the year, although most are partial. The last time Mexico was witness of a total solar eclipse was on July 11th, 1991, and the next one will occur on March 30th, 2052.

For this reason, scientific communities and tourists from around the world are preparing to observe this phenomenon that is already considered the “Great Mexican Eclipse”. On this occasion, Park Royal Hotels & Resorts wants to accompany you to live this unparalleled experience and be part of it.

How eclipses occur?

Universe has generated a particular fascination in humanity, since the beginning of times. Among all the phenomena that occur, we find eclipses, which are one of the most spectacular natural events, as they can change day into night, only to become day again in a few minutes.

An eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth move in a straight line, thus obscuring parts of one of these bodies with another. When the Earth is between the Moon and the Sun, a lunar eclipse occurs. If the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth, then a solar eclipse occurs.

Eclipse 2024, dates and times

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, in Spanish), through the Institute of Geophysics, has explained in detail the event that, we are sure, will fascinate you and will connect you in a very particular way with nature.

Most of the country will be able to witness the eclipse partially and, for example, in Mexico City, the maximum phase of it will cover 79% of the Sun, which will mean a partial darkening of the day.

In the port of Mazatlan the total eclipse will last 4:20 minutes, the longest duration on the entire continent, with a total calculation of 2:41 minutes of all phases of the solar eclipse. Astronomical calculations carried out by this academic institute indicates that, in the port of Mazatlan:

  • The eclipse will begin at 9:51 h.

  • The total phase of this will begin at 11:07 h, ending at 11:11 h.

  • Finally, the eclipse will end at 12:32 h.

To fully witness the total solar eclipse, your best option is to stay in one of the 131 rooms at Park Royal Beach Mazatlan. From its spectacular location, right on the beach, you will have the best view of the sea and you’ll be able to observe the eclipse from its infinity pool. Dare to live this experience accompanied by us!

Other coasts where the eclipse will be visible are Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta. Although it will not have the same duration as in Mazatlán, these ports will be protagonist witnesses of this astronomical event. To enjoy it at these points you can stay at Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta, Park Royal Homestay Los Tules Puerto Vallarta or Park Royal Homestay Los Cabos. Any of these options has an enviable location to witness this beautiful moment.

This astronomical event will be unique and we would like you not to miss it. That is why we’re waiting for you in any of the destinations you choose, so that you can enjoy a few minutes of connection with the Universe and also marvel at the wonder of living in this planet.

Jazz, necklaces and food: Mardi Gras is here!

Jazz, necklaces and food: Mardi Gras is here!

The parade season around the world is here and we want to spread the spirit that floods the streets of the most emblematic cities, such as Rio de Janeiro and of course, the United States in such iconic cities as New Orleans where for almost two centuries, one of the most anticipated parades in the world has been taking place, of course, we are talking about Mardi Gras, how did it start, what does it celebrate, what does it mean to get necklaces at Mardi Gras?

We tell you all about it!

Mardi Gras origins

Mardi Gras, which translates as "Fat Tuesday" in French, is an annual event that marks the last day of the carnival season and is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Christian tradition of Lent.

In the historical records it is said that France was the first owner of Louisiana and years later, France gave Louisiana to Spain to finally be purchased by the United States in 1803, moment in which, it already had an extensive French historical and cultural record, including its traditional and colorful parade that brought visitors from all over the world to New Orleans.

Since then and until today, two weeks before Mardi Gras, it is possible to see daily small parades and parade floats that pass through the streets of this magical city.

Jazz, masks, and necklaces?

It is no surprise that Louisiana has been the birthplace of famous jazzmen such as King Oliver and even the legendary trumpet player and best jazz performer in history; Louis Armstrongs, a legacy that remains to this day and you can hear it in the small bars of New Orleans that, on these dates are crowded with travelers from all over the world to delight your ears.

Of course, the masks are another of the most colorful elements of these dates, and we assure you, you will not find two identical ones during your visit to this city. Although, at the beginning, this element was typical of the Venice Carnival, thanks to immigration and cultural heritage, has been well received on the eve of this parade by locals and tourists.

Some of the most famous masks you will find are: the Bautas, which cover the entire face and date back to the 18th century, the oval-shaped Moretta, made of black velvet, the Plague Doctor, popular due to its prominent long beak in the shape of a bird, the Gnaga, in the shape of a female cat, and the most popular of all: the Harlequin and the Colombina, mask of the so-called "harlequin's bride" which is mistakenly known as "calypso eye mask".

When it comes to giving necklaces, there is an accepted historical explanation and it is that around the 19th century, the popular belief was that purple meant justice, green, faith and gold, power, therefore, whoever gives you a necklace of these tones on the eve of Mardi Gras, will be giving you their best wishes.

When is Mardi Gras 2024?

Pack your bags, masks and necklaces because next February 13th you have a date in New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras and be a witness of everything we tell you in this article. Don't forget to try the traditional King Cake, a traditional cake decorated with the colors of the carnival (green, purple and gold) and sometimes with a small toy hidden inside.

Where to celebrate Mardi Gras 2024?

If you are in the mood to enjoy another destination that also celebrates its own version of Mardi Gras, just two hours away on a commercial flight, you will arrive to Orlando, where Disney World Theme Parks also celebrate this date and at Park Royal Orlando, we will be the starting place for your adventure.

If you prefer to celebrate in another area, our beach destinations at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts will also have their own celebration with Mardi Gras activities that our Funtastic Team has prepared for you to enjoy, from arts and crafts to colorful parties so no one is left out of this amazing event.

A colorful party: Carnival awaits you!

During the first days of February the carnival season is celebrated. In Mexico, this festival has an important relevance for locals, as it becomes a time to share the country's culture with those who come from different parts of the globe to enjoy magical nights, full of dance and music.

These festivities are celebrated all over the world, and they have a history almost as old as the first great civilizations. The main reason for its existence is to celebrate the end of winter and the preparation for the spring season, which brings with it the rebirth of life and, with it, the joy of living together.

To enjoy these festivities, but also have spaces for rest and peace, you can stay in the different complexes that Park Royal Hotels & Resorts offers in each of the destinations that we tell you about here, so that you do not miss out on the opportunity to enjoy this start of the year surrounded by dancing and rest.

Celebrate 150 years of the Cozumel Carnival

In the state of Quintana Roo you can enjoy two great carnivals: Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. In both, tradition combines the beauty of the Mexican Caribbean with music and dance, which end up flooding the air of these magical destinations with color.

This year the Cozumel carnival turns 150 years old, so the small city in southeastern Mexico is preparing to celebrate in a big way. 10 minutes from the center of the island, on Rafael E. Melgar’s Avenue (where the float parade will take place), Grand Park Royal Cozumel is located, which makes our resort an ideal option for you to experience this party, considered one of the most important in the country.

The first activities of this edition of the carnival started the last week of January, with the beginning of voting for the kings of the carnival, of diversity, for the youth sovereigns and for the children's monarchs. Starting on February 8th, the parades, musical presentations and concerts will begin and will end on the 14th, with the classic burning of “Juan Carnaval”.

A “Tropical Fantasy” awaits you at the next Isla Mujeres carnival, which will take place from February 9th to 13th on this small island, located north of the city of Cancun. In this edition, salsa and other Caribbean rhythms will make all attendees dance.

The party in Isla Mujeres will happen just a boat ride away from Grand Park Royal Cancún and Park Royal Beach Cancún, so if you plan to be in the Mexican Caribbean during the first days of February, you’ll find a fun option here, also music and delicious food. Welcome!

A “road trip” to the Mérida carnival

Very close to Quintana Roo is Mérida, which is home to another of these celebrations that have captivated hundreds of thousands of people for more than a century.

This festivity, which will feature the presence of the famous DJ Steve Aoki and the reggaeton singer Nicky Jam, will occur between January 27th and February 13th. To enjoy it, you can arrive by car from our resorts Grand Park Royal Cancún and Park Royal Beach Cancún, so it’s an opportunity to combine your stay with a road trip.

The Mérida Carnival will be developed under the motto “Re-Evolution, from Fantasy to Innovation”, as it seeks to demonstrate that the city is in constant change, like humanity itself.

An international carnival: Mazatlán

The Mazatlán International Carnival, 2024, called “Baroque Eclipse” will take place from February 8th to 13th. It will feature artistic expressions as diverse as plastic dances and regional Mexican singers or rock bands and baroque music.

The “Teodoro Mariscal” baseball stadium will be the scene of the coronation of the various monarchs of this carnival. The best of all? The main stage of the celebration is located just over 15 minutes away from Park Royal Beach Mazatlán, making our resort an excellent option to enjoy the party in which international artists will participate.

Tenor Fernando de la Mora and Latin Grammy winner, Ely Guerra, will participate in this edition of the great Carnival. On February 10th, after the coronation of the Carnival Queen, the famous pop singer, Emmanuel, will perform.

We hope that the options we’ve shared with you are a motivation for you to travel to these destinations and let yourself be infected by the music that will run through the streets of these emblematic Mexican cities. The best, from the hand of Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, which is ready to be the place of your rest.

Tamales and a not only Mexican celebration

Tamales and a not only Mexican celebration

After the Christmas holidays, a tradition is carried out in Mexico that combines colorful elements with flavor, fused into gastronomic expressions. The tamales and a party in his honor occur on February 2nd of each year.

The tradition, which began as a religious festival, today is a reason for communities from all over the country to gather and enjoy a dinner in which they can taste this typical dish. On this occasion we will tell you a little more about this date, which has as its precursor the Rosca de Reyes (Three King’s bread), which is eaten on January 5th and 6th.

“The Child” and the Rosca de Reyes

On February 2nd, in different traditional locations in Mexico, the "uprising of the child" is carried out, which consists of bringing images of the Child Jesus to Catholic temples. Over the years, this religious tradition was woven into another ritual, one that occurs the month before: eating Rosca de Reyes.

Between January 5th and 6th of each year, Mexican families gather to eat this traditional bread that, inside, has hidden figurines that symbolize that Child God. Whoever, when breaking bread, finds “the child” will be obliged to invite everyone who participated in that event to eat tamales and atole on February 2nd.

Tamales: an ancient indigenous tradition

The name “tamalli” or tamal comes from the Nahuatl language, which means “wrapped with care”. It’s a food based on corn, combined with meat and sauce or with fruits, which is cooked in a leaf of the same plant or the banana tree.

From the first years of the Spanish conquest in Mexico, Fray Bernardino de Sahagún related that this dish was part of the gastronomy of Mesoamerican cultures. In the document “General History of Things in New Spain” he narrated that tamales were eaten, mainly during Mexican festivities.

Currently, we can find an enormous diversity of these foods: rajas with cheese, pumpkin, broad beans, potatoes or beans. But there are also combinations such as chicken with mole, sauce with chicken or strawberry with raisins, commonly known from the color that characterizes them (green, red or pink).

In the Park Royal Hotels & Resorts restaurants you can find some presentations of tamales. Inside the Veranda restaurant, in Park Royal Beach Huatulco, you will find traditional mole tamales, which combine this delicious food with chicken.

La Candelaria in Argentina?

Catholic devotions had an important weight in the founding of Latin American cities. The images of saints and virgins gave names to localities that, today, preserve their tradition in some way.

This is the case of Buenos Aires, which has as its image and spiritual benefactor the Virgin of Candelaria, called Our Lady of Buen Aire (Good Wind). In her honor, the city celebrates cultural and gastronomic festivities.

Although the main festival is celebrated on April 24th, as it’s a representation of that deity, celebrations are also held on February 2nd. 15 minutes from the Basilica of Buenos Aires is Park Royal City Buenos Aires, from where you can go out to visit the capital of Argentina and delight in its magic.

The combinations and mixtures of cultures, known as syncretism, have given us, over the centuries, an endless number of festivities and traditions that we can enjoy today. This time, we hope that we’ve awakened your desire to learn more about these customs and that you allow yourself to enjoy them with the help of Park Royal Hotels & Resorts.

Industrial method

The corn is fermented for 3 to 5 days, then it is put in a blender with piloncillo and water, finally lemon and salt are added to taste.

Popular method

The most popular way and with which most street and local vendors make this drink is the following:

First, an "atole" is prepared by boiling the diluted corn and adding the piloncillo. When it corn masa thickens and takes on a viscous texture it is left to ferment spontaneously for 24 to 48 hours.

In fact, it was demonstrated that tejuino, is able to displace pathogenic bacteria thanks to its large amount of lactic acid bacteria and, in addition, if we add salt and lemon, we will not only improve its taste but also its power to reject pathogenic bacteria by lowering the ph.
After these results, the researchers concluded that among the properties of this drink we have:

Join us in this article and we will tell you a little about the history of this renowned rum company and the different types of visits and tours that can be carried out, without a doubt, a highly recommended experience.

History of the Bacardi House

In 1862, the couple formed by Facundo Bacardí Massó and Amalia Moreau founded the Bacardi alcoholic beverage company in Santiago de Cuba after having moved from Barcelona where they were originally from during their adolescence.

After a long process of trial and error, Don Facundo was able to develop a softer and sweeter alcoholic beverage, achieving a different rum that contrasted very well with the liquor that was widely consumed at the time.

History of the Bacardi House

Bat symbol

Don Facundo Bacardi's wife discovers a colony of bats in the distillery they had recently acquired. These fruit bats had a special meaning in Barcelona, the place of origin of marriage where it was said that these animals are symbols of good fortune, brotherhood and fidelity.

At the same time, these bats are great natural partners for the cultivation of sugar cane with which rum is made, since they are responsible for pollinating the crops and feed on insects and parasites that harm this plant.

For these reasons, from that moment on the new symbol of the company would be the iconic Bacardi bat.

The Bacardi House Puerto Rico

Already in 1936, the alcoholic beverage company had expanded very significantly and opened a distillery in Puerto Rico due to the high price of tariffs that were paid to send rum to the United States.

Finally, due to the tense situation that was being experienced in Cuba due to the revolution, the Bacardi family decided to move all its main operations to the island of Puerto Rico where a few years ago they had built the new distillery.

Today, Casa Bacardí Puerto Rico is one of the main companies on the island and even the Secretary of Puerto Rico himself, Ferdinand Mercado, has commented that the first thing many tourists ask when they arrive on the island is where to find the Bacardi House.

New Year in Puerto Rico

New Year in Puerto Rico

The New Year holiday is celebrated in different ways around the world. Knowing the different traditions of other cultures can enrich our vision and give us ideas to practice their rituals and welcome 2024 freshly.
This time we explore the most common traditions and rituals on the beautiful island, where natural elements play a central role. In addition, you can do them in the facilities of our resort Park Royal Homestay Club Cala Puerto Rico, which is a beautiful complex that will enchant you.

Clean the past with water

The main tradition is to welcome the New Year with a water battle. The climatic conditions of this beautiful country allow a child's game to become a cleansing ritual to receive the new cycle.
Water, one of the four basic elements in the world, is of central importance to all cultures. It is given a purifying character that becomes ideal for starting cycles. In Puerto Rico, families throw buckets of water out the window to get rid of the problems that occurred in the past year and thus clear the way for what is to come. They gather in the houses to fill buckets and pots with water that they throw at the doors just as the final 12 bells of the year strike.
Aside from cleansing the past, this ritual is associated with attracting good luck and abundance.

Making noise and put on red ribbons

Another tradition carried out in Puerto Rico is to hang a red ribbon on the front door of houses as a sign that one seeks to ward off bad luck. In different Latin American countries it is believed that this amulet can prevent the "evil eye", as well as being a victim of envy, jealousy, negativity and similar situations. Along with this practice to avoid “bad spirits” is the tradition of making noise with plates and glasses. According to popular belief, noise drives away bad vibes and helps start the year in a good mood.

Party and family meal

As part of the culture of Puerto Rico, the arrival of the New Year is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm with the family. There is dinner and dancing all night and into the early morning.
It is a very abundant and typical dinner with dishes such as rice with gandules, pernil, asopao, salads, cakes, typical sweets and a wide variety of drinks, such as cava, which is a typical sparkling drink of the island.
After dinner the party continues with dances such as salsa, bachata and reggaeton. Some people like to wear costumes and paint their faces or use the Vejigante masks, which correspond to the carnival, but which also come out on these dates.

By midnight the family continues to gather to watch fireworks show and shoot rockets. We hope that these traditions awaken the desire to live them and even let us accompany you during these holidays.

Christmas traditions in Mexico

Christmas traditions in Mexico

The Christmas holidays are here and with them the opportunity to live them “the Mexican way.” These charming traditions are celebrated with passion and joy in the streets and neighborhoods across the country. This part of Mexican culture, like almost all, is based on the rich mix of indigenous and Spanish influences that offer a unique experience, full of color, flavor, and spiritual fervor.
Christmas in Mexico is also decorated with the warmth of its people and the depth of their beliefs. Thus, these mixtures create an unforgettable experience for those who have the privilege of participating in them.
On this occasion we tell you about the meaning of the traditions of the season: the posadas, pastorelas, the piñatas, the Three Kings’ bread, and the Christmas bonuses (known as aguinaldos), which you can enjoy at the Christmas parties that we have for you and your family at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts.

A trip through the posadas

Recreating the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph, this is one of the most emblematic traditions of Mexican Christmas. The posadas are representations of that biblical passage when pilgrims seek refuge.
These colorful processions, which take place during the nine days leading up to Christmas Eve, involve the local community. Neighborhoods and families come together to sing Christmas carols, carry candles, and recreate the search for a place for the birth of Baby Jesus. Mexican hospitality shines, families open their doors to participants and offer them typical food, such as tamales and traditional drinks such as ponche.
During these holidays, bonuses (aguinaldos) are also given mostly to kids. This tradition have their origin in Rome, and with the Spanish conquest the custom of “masses of aguinaldo” was created. In them, pastorelas were represented and at the end of the show attendees were given small gifts. Over the years these gifts became small bags of sweets that contained typical fruits of the time of year, such as canes, tejocotes, peanuts and traditional snack sweets.

The fight between good and evil: the pastorelas

Pastorelas are a tradition deeply rooted in Mexican Christmas. They are theatrical performances that relive the story of the birth of Jesus with a unique touch of satire and mockery. In these works, religious elements are combined with humor and not only illustrate the fight of good against evil, with shepherds representing faithful followers and devils who try to divert them from the right path, but they are also used as a tool to transmit values. They are moral and religious teachings in an accessible and entertaining way.

A metaphor: piñatas

Piñatas are much more than just decorations, they have become a link to the country's rich cultural heritage. These colorful structures, made of paper or clay and decorated with shiny paper, hide a world of sweets, small toys and fruits.
Its meaning goes beyond the pleasure of sweets; they are a metaphor for faith and hope. Breaking the piñata represents the fight against evil and sins and the reward that comes when it breaks.

A delicious tradition

The the Three Kings’ bread is a delicacy that is typically eaten on January 6 to celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men. It is a bagel decorated with caramelized fruits, a sweet named “ate”, and stripes of sugar; inside, it hides small representative figures of baby Jesus. Cutting the bread is a special ceremony because the attendees want to find one of these figures in their portion of bread, which is considered a blessing and turns the lucky ones into godparents of the child during the Candelaria festivities, which occur in the month of February.

These are the most common Christmas traditions in Mexico. We hope we have left you wanting to live them and even more so, to practice them with us at our Grand Park Royal Cancún, Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta; or in Park Royal Beach Cancún, Huatulco and Ixtapa. In all of them you will find menus and activities planned so that you can experience a New Year's Eve full of this culture.
The origins of a cup of traditional “ponche”

The origins of a cup of traditional “ponche”

Over the years, this tasty drink has evolved, blending flavors and traditions from distinct cultures. Get to know more about this age-old beverage considered an iconic element of Christmas festivities in Mexico.

Not a Mexican Drink

A lot of folks think “Ponche” is a Mexican drink but, hold up! It was born in India, and its name comes from Sanskrit "pañc", which, when translated to Spanish, means "five" and refers to the original recipe's ingredients: alcohol, sugar, water, lemon, and tea.

Origins in Mexico

Ponche in Mexico traces back to the colonial era, when the Spanish introduced new ingredients like fruits, spices, and sugar, mingling with native elements such as tejocote, a Mexican native fruit, and sugarcane brought in by the Spanish. The drink was initially called "ponche de frutas" and was enjoyed during parties and celebrations. This mix of ingredients has given rise to a beverage with deep cultural significance.

Key Ingredients

Mexican ponche is usually made with a mix of fresh and dried fruits like guavas, tejocotes, sugarcane, prunes, and apples, giving it that distinctive flavor. Spices like cinnamon and cloves are added, and often, piloncillo (brown sugar) is thrown in for sweetness. The final addition is the alcohol, typically rum or brandy, though non-alcoholic versions exist too.

Party and Christmas Tradition

Ponche has become an essential part of posadas, the traditional pre-Christmas celebrations in Mexico. It is more than just a drink; it's a link between the past and the present, a manifestation of Mexico's culinary and cultural richness, and a reminder of the importance of gathering and celebration during the Christmas festivities.

We invite you to enjoy this ancient and delicious drink and preserve the tradition at the tastings we'll have during the December holidays at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts. Time to say: Cheers!

Say goodbye to the old ideas: Mayan New Year rituals

Say goodbye to the old ideas: Mayan New Year rituals

New Year’s eve is the moment where we can start a different cycle. Since ancient cultures, this type of festivals have already been celebrated, although not necessarily on the same dates as now. The difference in calendars and beliefs does not prevent the traditions and customs inherited from that time from leaving us a universe of possibilities to receive 2024.
For the Mayans, the beginning of the year took place around our month of July, which was for them the month of Pop. During this period they took a break to mark the beginning of a new cycle. It is from these festivities that we inherit rituals that are useful for those who want to receive a new year in a different way.
For most ancient cultures, cooking is one of the most important ritual moments to welcome a new year, but so are bodily rituals, such as cleaning houses, and performing ceremonial dances.
The idea of New Year's celebrations is to get rid of the old to welcome the future, the unknown.

Cleanliness and welcome to the new

According to historical research, it is known that the Mayan culture did celebrate the New Year’s eve in a very particular way. During the dates that they recognized as the beginning of the cycle, they worshiped all their idols and renewed the things they had as part of the household service, such as clothing, benches, and food vessels.
A tradition stands out that was of vital importance to welcome the year: sweeping and cleaning the houses to getting rid of old things that were thrown into the trash. This custom of cleaning houses with a broom is linked to the idea of renewing the energy of homes, with the intention that what happens next year will be beautiful.

Time for reflection

Of utmost importance for this culture was to dedicate a moment of personal reflection, to cleanse the spirit and contact nature. Observe and be present in your reality based on the basic elements: earth, water, fire and wind.
For this reason, fasting was a tradition that preceded the New Year festivities, as it helps to remain grateful to “Mother Nature”. The last days of the year were intended to contribute to becoming better people and taking the experiences as learning.

Incense, dances and new fire

Having prepared for the beginning of the new cycle, the ritual of the sacred fire could begin, presided over by Mayan priests who were dedicated to honoring all the gods. The “chaac” burned incense before the altars and on the New Year, all the males gathered in the temple courtyard to have a special dance and banquet.
A delicious feast, barbecues, dancing and Mayan purification rituals, among others, are some of the elements that Grand Park Royal Cozumel has prepared for you to spend this New Year. In this resort you can live the magic of the rituals that we present to you.
Ceremonies can also be held in the cenotes in the region. Located in the heart of the Mayan jungle, they are considered sacred places, so ceremonies are carried out to leave offerings and sacrifices, but understood from a more humanistic vision, so flowers are left and incense is burned or danced as thanks.
You have the best way to enjoy yourself. Don't forget to receive with the best attitude the first hours of a year that, we hope, will be very happy.

Whale watching season begins

Whale watching season begins

One of the favorite activities for those who love nature has finally arrived to Los Cabos! Watch humpback whales in their natural environment and get ready to experience one of the most impressive natural spectacles that Mexico has to offer.
Without any doubt, one of the best times to visit Mexican beaches is during the summer, however, we rarely visit beaches during the holiday season, often because of mistaken beliefs that the weather is not the best, but don't let yourself be fooled and get to know a new perspective of this season and activity!

Why you can see whales in Los Cabos?

According to SEMARNAT (Mexico's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources) data, the whale watching season occurs from mid-December to April and, it is known that these huge cetaceans prefer the waters of the Baja California Peninsula, which separates the Gulf of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean for two activities: mating and whale breeding.
Every year hundreds of whales' travel thousands of kilometers to feed and mate, their migration helps to ensure the health of the oceans, according to environmental organizations such as WWF.

On average, a whale can give birth to one calf per year and the gestation time is 12 months, so the calves are conceived and born in these same waters.

How many whales can you see in a day in Los Cabos?

Although there is not an exact number, hundreds of travelers who have visited this area during the whale watching season report that they have seen from 4 to 6 whales per day along Los Cabos coasts which are visible not only on board the small tourist boats that you can rent in the area, but also thanks to the eye of drones that fly over this amazing spectacle.
In addition, the color of the water is perfect to contemplate them from every angle. The species that can be found most often are the humpback whales. They are dark-colored and quite friendly. The atmosphere that you can feel is very familiar, as they play among themselves with the calves that are born in the Mexican waters.
You can also find whale sharks, which can begin to be sighted in October, as well as gray whales, a species that tends to nest near the coast and it is possible to watch them without having to go into the sea.
The best time to see whales in Los Cabos is in the morning, which is the time when humpback whales feed in groups and congregate with calves. Towards the middle of the day, the cetaceans' swimming activity increases, so they can be found in deeper waters.

To watch them, visit natural parks and reserves

These magnificent marine animals can be watched in natural reserves such as El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve located in Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio Lagoons.

Another place to observe them is the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area (APFF), which includes the area near the Cabo San Lucas Arch and provides the perfect setting for photographing one of the most popular sights in the area full of these beautiful animals. Don't miss the opportunity to meet them and to enhance your experience at Hotel Park Royal Homestay Los Cabos, the perfect place to live your vacation with freedom and comfort.

Discover Little Havana

Discover Little Havana

In the heart of Miami is what is today one of the most famous neighborhoods of the city in South Florida. We are talking about Little Havana, also called in Spanish "Little Havana".

In this neighborhood full of rhythm and color, many Latin people and, above all, people of Cuban nationality or descent live together, who find in this American neighborhood a little piece of their land in which the lifestyle of their native country is recreated.

If you are lucky enough to be staying at Park Royal Miami Beach

We invite you to visit one of the city's obligatory stops, Little Havana, where you will find a neighborhood full of life that will welcome you without a thought.

History of the neighborhood

Around 1930, Little Havana was more of a lower-middle class Jewish neighborhood and a place that went unnoticed. Finally, towards the year 1960, due to the harsh situation in Cuba due to the Revolution and the internal war that existed in the country, many Cuban citizens emigrated to the United States, and more specifically to the city of Miami where they could escape the merciless violence that was in the Latin country.

History of the neighborhood

After this massive escape of Cuban refugees, little by little the neighborhood was transformed and named as it is known today, Little Havana, becoming the cultural and political capital of Cuban Americans, and also the center of the community of Cuban exiles.

Calle Ocho

The vast majority of life in Little Havana occurs around Miami's renowned Calle Ocho. On this street you can see cigar artisans, dozens of Cuban restaurants, shops and venues where you can listen to vibrant music... Without a doubt, it will transport you to Cuba itself in this place where 98% of its population (which exceeds 50,000 people) is of Latin origin or descent.

As it could not be otherwise, when you walk through this neighborhood the aroma of traditional coffee is intense and you can see many elderly people playing dominoes and trying to fix the world while they talk about the past and future of Cuba.

Calle ocho de Miami

If you walk along Calle Ocho it is essential that you enjoy a good Cuban coffee or the famous Guarapo, a type of juice based on sugar cane juice.

Along this famous street in Little Havana there is a very curious attraction for visitors, nothing more and nothing less than the Latin Walk of Fame in which the most prolific artists of this country are remembered:

• Andy Garcia
• Gloria Estefan
• Celia Cruz
• Julio Iglesias
• Sammy Sosa

Thalia's star on the Latin Walk of Fame

Other places of interest

Máximo Gómez Park

This place is a mandatory stop in Little Havana and there we will basically find a large number of elderly Latinos and Cubans playing dominoes and chess, which is why it is also known colloquially as Domino Park.

As a curiosity, we have learned that players follow very strict rules and can be expelled if they shout or speak badly to other players.

13th Avenue

To the south of Calle Ocho begins Avenida 13, a very quiet place in the Cuban neighborhood where we can find the Cuban Memorial Boulevard and it is the patriotic heart of the neighborhood.

On the walls of this avenue we can see graffiti and sculptures in honor of great figures in Cuban history such as the revolutionary poet José Martí or the war hero Antonio Maceo.

It is a perfect place to take a break after touring the lively Calle Ocho, because it is a very quiet, pleasant and cozy place.

Little Havana's Tower Theater

This is one of the oldest monuments in the city and was built in 1926. This historic theater has an Art Deco style and today shows films and shorts in Spanish or English. It is also common to see projects by filmmakers from Miami who are growing.

During the period when the Little Havana neighborhood was at its peak, this theater was the only movie theater in all of Miami where you could watch movies with Spanish subtitles.

Little Havana Cinema

To this day it continues to be one of the biggest tourist and leisure attractions of this city in southern Florida and is just 20 minutes by car from Park Royal Miami Beach, so we invite you to visit this unique neighborhood that, without a doubt, will not leave anyone indifferent.

Death in Huichol mythology

Death in Huichol mythology

The Wixárika culture, commonly known as Huichol, is a sample of resistance of pre-Hispanic cultures. Their beliefs and rituals have survived historical attempts at conquest and extermination. They maintain a cosmogony in which death is one of the bridges that unite the divine with the human.

The Huichol maintain their own conception of the origin and history of humanity, which for them is “cosmic” or true. Their Gods are conceived as ancestors and are represented in colorful mosaics. In them we can find corn, peyote and deer as central figures.

These symbols show the way in which the Huichol conceive of death: as a transition process to return to divinity, to the cosmos. By considering the gods as ancestors, their dead relatives become semi-divinities.

The Huichol live integrated with the world of the sacred and coexisted with it through various mystical experiences represented in rituals. This causes them to establish a kinship between both worlds.

Despite the above, this culture does not celebrate the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead, as occurs in neighboring communities, but they do maintain a ceremony that is performed when someone dies.

They believe that, at the moment of death, the soul of the deceased begins a process to reunite with the whole. Then it becomes air or cloud over the heads of its relatives, which is why they consider the corpses sacred and untouchable.

Their conception of the death process is similar to other Mesoamerican groups, such as the Aztecs. The Wixaritari believe that upon death the soul must go through a difficult journey, full of trials, that leads it through five levels that descend to the underworld.

They believe that the first place where the soul meets its ancestors is in front of an amate tree. For the living, all contact with the dead is prohibited, so they build “ririkis”, which are small sanctuaries in which they protect the body along with ritual objects and representations of their gods.

The Huichol believe that the dead person returns to the earth after five years, now converted into rock crystal. But in case this does not happen, one way in which they can honor their dead and address them, as time passes, is through the ririkis themselves, who are located in what they know as “ranch of the dead”.

The Wixárika culture is located mainly in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. One way to get to get to know this community is through the “Huichol Route”, which begins on the beaches of these states. Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta is an excellent option to stay, because from this place you can go to the other points that make up the route, such as Rincón de Guayabitos, Punta Mita, Peñita de Jaltemba, Tepic and San Blas.
Halloween or Day of the Dead? Celebrate in Mexico

Halloween or Day of the Dead? Celebrate in Mexico

Halloween and Day of the Dead are two of the most fascinating and popular celebrations that go down in October. Despite their different cultural and geographic origins, these festivities have striking similarities and share the purpose of honoring the dead.

Halloween: A night of spooks and surprises

Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, is a Celtic tradition that has evolved into one of the most iconic celebrations in the world. The word "Halloween" comes from "All Hallows' Eve" or "Eve of All Saints." Originally, the Celts celebrated Samhain, a shindig marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter.

Day of the Dead: Honoring loved ones

Day of the Dead, mainly celebrated in Mexico from October 31st to November 2nd, is deeply rooted in Mexican culture. Its origins trace back to pre-Hispanic indigenous civilizations who revered their ancestors and believed in life after death.

Similarities between Halloween and Day of the Dead

Despite their differences in history and cultural focus, both celebrations have a central theme of honoring the deceased. While Halloween approaches more playfully, Day of the Dead treats it with respect and love, remembering beloved departed ones.

One thing to note about these festivities is that both promote family togetherness. On Halloween, this is reflected in the parties and the tradition of trick-or-treating, on the other hand, on Day of the Dead families come together to build altars in honor of loved ones who are no longer with us.

No matter what holiday we celebrate, Halloween and Day of the Dead remind us of the importance of enjoying these moments as a family while remembering those who are no longer with us.

In this regard, at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, we offer a wide range of activities for you to have a unique experience with your loved ones, such as:

- Pumpkin or sugar skull decorating
- Costume parties and contests
- Themed performances
- Pan de muerto (bread of the dead) tasting
