New Year in Puerto Rico

New Year in Puerto Rico

The New Year holiday is celebrated in different ways around the world. Knowing the different traditions of other cultures can enrich our vision and give us ideas to practice their rituals and welcome 2024 freshly.
This time we explore the most common traditions and rituals on the beautiful island, where natural elements play a central role. In addition, you can do them in the facilities of our resort Park Royal Homestay Club Cala Puerto Rico, which is a beautiful complex that will enchant you.

Clean the past with water

The main tradition is to welcome the New Year with a water battle. The climatic conditions of this beautiful country allow a child's game to become a cleansing ritual to receive the new cycle.
Water, one of the four basic elements in the world, is of central importance to all cultures. It is given a purifying character that becomes ideal for starting cycles. In Puerto Rico, families throw buckets of water out the window to get rid of the problems that occurred in the past year and thus clear the way for what is to come. They gather in the houses to fill buckets and pots with water that they throw at the doors just as the final 12 bells of the year strike.
Aside from cleansing the past, this ritual is associated with attracting good luck and abundance.

Making noise and put on red ribbons

Another tradition carried out in Puerto Rico is to hang a red ribbon on the front door of houses as a sign that one seeks to ward off bad luck. In different Latin American countries it is believed that this amulet can prevent the "evil eye", as well as being a victim of envy, jealousy, negativity and similar situations. Along with this practice to avoid “bad spirits” is the tradition of making noise with plates and glasses. According to popular belief, noise drives away bad vibes and helps start the year in a good mood.

Party and family meal

As part of the culture of Puerto Rico, the arrival of the New Year is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm with the family. There is dinner and dancing all night and into the early morning.
It is a very abundant and typical dinner with dishes such as rice with gandules, pernil, asopao, salads, cakes, typical sweets and a wide variety of drinks, such as cava, which is a typical sparkling drink of the island.
After dinner the party continues with dances such as salsa, bachata and reggaeton. Some people like to wear costumes and paint their faces or use the Vejigante masks, which correspond to the carnival, but which also come out on these dates.

By midnight the family continues to gather to watch fireworks show and shoot rockets. We hope that these traditions awaken the desire to live them and even let us accompany you during these holidays.

Christmas traditions in Mexico

Christmas traditions in Mexico

The Christmas holidays are here and with them the opportunity to live them “the Mexican way.” These charming traditions are celebrated with passion and joy in the streets and neighborhoods across the country. This part of Mexican culture, like almost all, is based on the rich mix of indigenous and Spanish influences that offer a unique experience, full of color, flavor, and spiritual fervor.
Christmas in Mexico is also decorated with the warmth of its people and the depth of their beliefs. Thus, these mixtures create an unforgettable experience for those who have the privilege of participating in them.
On this occasion we tell you about the meaning of the traditions of the season: the posadas, pastorelas, the piñatas, the Three Kings’ bread, and the Christmas bonuses (known as aguinaldos), which you can enjoy at the Christmas parties that we have for you and your family at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts.

A trip through the posadas

Recreating the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph, this is one of the most emblematic traditions of Mexican Christmas. The posadas are representations of that biblical passage when pilgrims seek refuge.
These colorful processions, which take place during the nine days leading up to Christmas Eve, involve the local community. Neighborhoods and families come together to sing Christmas carols, carry candles, and recreate the search for a place for the birth of Baby Jesus. Mexican hospitality shines, families open their doors to participants and offer them typical food, such as tamales and traditional drinks such as ponche.
During these holidays, bonuses (aguinaldos) are also given mostly to kids. This tradition have their origin in Rome, and with the Spanish conquest the custom of “masses of aguinaldo” was created. In them, pastorelas were represented and at the end of the show attendees were given small gifts. Over the years these gifts became small bags of sweets that contained typical fruits of the time of year, such as canes, tejocotes, peanuts and traditional snack sweets.

The fight between good and evil: the pastorelas

Pastorelas are a tradition deeply rooted in Mexican Christmas. They are theatrical performances that relive the story of the birth of Jesus with a unique touch of satire and mockery. In these works, religious elements are combined with humor and not only illustrate the fight of good against evil, with shepherds representing faithful followers and devils who try to divert them from the right path, but they are also used as a tool to transmit values. They are moral and religious teachings in an accessible and entertaining way.

A metaphor: piñatas

Piñatas are much more than just decorations, they have become a link to the country's rich cultural heritage. These colorful structures, made of paper or clay and decorated with shiny paper, hide a world of sweets, small toys and fruits.
Its meaning goes beyond the pleasure of sweets; they are a metaphor for faith and hope. Breaking the piñata represents the fight against evil and sins and the reward that comes when it breaks.

A delicious tradition

The the Three Kings’ bread is a delicacy that is typically eaten on January 6 to celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men. It is a bagel decorated with caramelized fruits, a sweet named “ate”, and stripes of sugar; inside, it hides small representative figures of baby Jesus. Cutting the bread is a special ceremony because the attendees want to find one of these figures in their portion of bread, which is considered a blessing and turns the lucky ones into godparents of the child during the Candelaria festivities, which occur in the month of February.

These are the most common Christmas traditions in Mexico. We hope we have left you wanting to live them and even more so, to practice them with us at our Grand Park Royal Cancún, Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta; or in Park Royal Beach Cancún, Huatulco and Ixtapa. In all of them you will find menus and activities planned so that you can experience a New Year's Eve full of this culture.

The origins of a cup of traditional “ponche”

The origins of a cup of traditional “ponche”

Over the years, this tasty drink has evolved, blending flavors and traditions from distinct cultures. Get to know more about this age-old beverage considered an iconic element of Christmas festivities in Mexico.

Not a Mexican Drink

A lot of folks think “Ponche” is a Mexican drink but, hold up! It was born in India, and its name comes from Sanskrit "pañc", which, when translated to Spanish, means "five" and refers to the original recipe's ingredients: alcohol, sugar, water, lemon, and tea.

Origins in Mexico

Ponche in Mexico traces back to the colonial era, when the Spanish introduced new ingredients like fruits, spices, and sugar, mingling with native elements such as tejocote, a Mexican native fruit, and sugarcane brought in by the Spanish. The drink was initially called "ponche de frutas" and was enjoyed during parties and celebrations. This mix of ingredients has given rise to a beverage with deep cultural significance.

Key Ingredients

Mexican ponche is usually made with a mix of fresh and dried fruits like guavas, tejocotes, sugarcane, prunes, and apples, giving it that distinctive flavor. Spices like cinnamon and cloves are added, and often, piloncillo (brown sugar) is thrown in for sweetness. The final addition is the alcohol, typically rum or brandy, though non-alcoholic versions exist too.

Party and Christmas Tradition

Ponche has become an essential part of posadas, the traditional pre-Christmas celebrations in Mexico. It is more than just a drink; it's a link between the past and the present, a manifestation of Mexico's culinary and cultural richness, and a reminder of the importance of gathering and celebration during the Christmas festivities.

We invite you to enjoy this ancient and delicious drink and preserve the tradition at the tastings we'll have during the December holidays at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts. Time to say: Cheers!

Say goodbye to the old ideas: Mayan New Year rituals

Say goodbye to the old ideas: Mayan New Year rituals

New Year’s eve is the moment where we can start a different cycle. Since ancient cultures, this type of festivals have already been celebrated, although not necessarily on the same dates as now. The difference in calendars and beliefs does not prevent the traditions and customs inherited from that time from leaving us a universe of possibilities to receive 2024.
For the Mayans, the beginning of the year took place around our month of July, which was for them the month of Pop. During this period they took a break to mark the beginning of a new cycle. It is from these festivities that we inherit rituals that are useful for those who want to receive a new year in a different way.
For most ancient cultures, cooking is one of the most important ritual moments to welcome a new year, but so are bodily rituals, such as cleaning houses, and performing ceremonial dances.
The idea of New Year's celebrations is to get rid of the old to welcome the future, the unknown.

Cleanliness and welcome to the new

According to historical research, it is known that the Mayan culture did celebrate the New Year’s eve in a very particular way. During the dates that they recognized as the beginning of the cycle, they worshiped all their idols and renewed the things they had as part of the household service, such as clothing, benches, and food vessels.
A tradition stands out that was of vital importance to welcome the year: sweeping and cleaning the houses to getting rid of old things that were thrown into the trash. This custom of cleaning houses with a broom is linked to the idea of renewing the energy of homes, with the intention that what happens next year will be beautiful.

Time for reflection

Of utmost importance for this culture was to dedicate a moment of personal reflection, to cleanse the spirit and contact nature. Observe and be present in your reality based on the basic elements: earth, water, fire and wind.
For this reason, fasting was a tradition that preceded the New Year festivities, as it helps to remain grateful to “Mother Nature”. The last days of the year were intended to contribute to becoming better people and taking the experiences as learning.

Incense, dances and new fire

Having prepared for the beginning of the new cycle, the ritual of the sacred fire could begin, presided over by Mayan priests who were dedicated to honoring all the gods. The “chaac” burned incense before the altars and on the New Year, all the males gathered in the temple courtyard to have a special dance and banquet.
A delicious feast, barbecues, dancing and Mayan purification rituals, among others, are some of the elements that Grand Park Royal Cozumel has prepared for you to spend this New Year. In this resort you can live the magic of the rituals that we present to you.
Ceremonies can also be held in the cenotes in the region. Located in the heart of the Mayan jungle, they are considered sacred places, so ceremonies are carried out to leave offerings and sacrifices, but understood from a more humanistic vision, so flowers are left and incense is burned or danced as thanks.
You have the best way to enjoy yourself. Don't forget to receive with the best attitude the first hours of a year that, we hope, will be very happy.

Whale watching season begins

Whale watching season begins

One of the favorite activities for those who love nature has finally arrived to Los Cabos! Watch humpback whales in their natural environment and get ready to experience one of the most impressive natural spectacles that Mexico has to offer.
Without any doubt, one of the best times to visit Mexican beaches is during the summer, however, we rarely visit beaches during the holiday season, often because of mistaken beliefs that the weather is not the best, but don't let yourself be fooled and get to know a new perspective of this season and activity!

Why you can see whales in Los Cabos?

According to SEMARNAT (Mexico's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources) data, the whale watching season occurs from mid-December to April and, it is known that these huge cetaceans prefer the waters of the Baja California Peninsula, which separates the Gulf of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean for two activities: mating and whale breeding.
Every year hundreds of whales' travel thousands of kilometers to feed and mate, their migration helps to ensure the health of the oceans, according to environmental organizations such as WWF.

On average, a whale can give birth to one calf per year and the gestation time is 12 months, so the calves are conceived and born in these same waters.

How many whales can you see in a day in Los Cabos?

Although there is not an exact number, hundreds of travelers who have visited this area during the whale watching season report that they have seen from 4 to 6 whales per day along Los Cabos coasts which are visible not only on board the small tourist boats that you can rent in the area, but also thanks to the eye of drones that fly over this amazing spectacle.
In addition, the color of the water is perfect to contemplate them from every angle. The species that can be found most often are the humpback whales. They are dark-colored and quite friendly. The atmosphere that you can feel is very familiar, as they play among themselves with the calves that are born in the Mexican waters.
You can also find whale sharks, which can begin to be sighted in October, as well as gray whales, a species that tends to nest near the coast and it is possible to watch them without having to go into the sea.
The best time to see whales in Los Cabos is in the morning, which is the time when humpback whales feed in groups and congregate with calves. Towards the middle of the day, the cetaceans' swimming activity increases, so they can be found in deeper waters.

To watch them, visit natural parks and reserves

These magnificent marine animals can be watched in natural reserves such as El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve located in Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio Lagoons.

Another place to observe them is the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area (APFF), which includes the area near the Cabo San Lucas Arch and provides the perfect setting for photographing one of the most popular sights in the area full of these beautiful animals. Don't miss the opportunity to meet them and to enhance your experience at Hotel Park Royal Homestay Los Cabos, the perfect place to live your vacation with freedom and comfort.

Bar Morelos

If we talk about nightlife in the city of Puerto Vallarta, it is essential that we mention the well-known Bar Morelos, without a doubt, one of the most famous spots in the entire city to go out for a drink and enjoy music.

This mezcalería is a magical and highly decorated place with exclusive lounges, Las Vegas style sofas and gigantic chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. You can also try delicious cocktails while enjoying the light show and music until late into the night.

Rhythms of the Night Puerto Vallarta: “ALMA”

Rhythms of the Night Puerto Vallarta are immersive shows for the senses directed by Gilles Ste-Croix of Circo del Sol himself. The afternoon begins with a boat ride accompanied by a welcome cocktail while watching the sunset. After this mini cruise you arrive at a private beach where you can enjoy a romantic dinner, after which visitors are taken to a beautiful open-air amphitheater where the show takes place.

ALMA

ALMA is the name given to the last of the shows created for Ritmos de la Noche and it tells a fast-paced story that tells of the spiritual connection with animals, ancestral spirits and nature, in short, it celebrates the rich culture of the island.

In this show we can observe the legend of the protective guardian of the pyramid, a sacred object. The protagonist has to try at all costs to ensure that no one touches this most magical and precious symbol of the island. Discover Little Havana

Discover Little Havana

In the heart of Miami is what is today one of the most famous neighborhoods of the city in South Florida. We are talking about Little Havana, also called in Spanish "Little Havana".

In this neighborhood full of rhythm and color, many Latin people and, above all, people of Cuban nationality or descent live together, who find in this American neighborhood a little piece of their land in which the lifestyle of their native country is recreated.

If you are lucky enough to be staying at Park Royal Miami Beach

We invite you to visit one of the city's obligatory stops, Little Havana, where you will find a neighborhood full of life that will welcome you without a thought.

History of the neighborhood

Around 1930, Little Havana was more of a lower-middle class Jewish neighborhood and a place that went unnoticed. Finally, towards the year 1960, due to the harsh situation in Cuba due to the Revolution and the internal war that existed in the country, many Cuban citizens emigrated to the United States, and more specifically to the city of Miami where they could escape the merciless violence that was in the Latin country.

History of the neighborhood

After this massive escape of Cuban refugees, little by little the neighborhood was transformed and named as it is known today, Little Havana, becoming the cultural and political capital of Cuban Americans, and also the center of the community of Cuban exiles.

Calle Ocho

The vast majority of life in Little Havana occurs around Miami's renowned Calle Ocho. On this street you can see cigar artisans, dozens of Cuban restaurants, shops and venues where you can listen to vibrant music... Without a doubt, it will transport you to Cuba itself in this place where 98% of its population (which exceeds 50,000 people) is of Latin origin or descent.

As it could not be otherwise, when you walk through this neighborhood the aroma of traditional coffee is intense and you can see many elderly people playing dominoes and trying to fix the world while they talk about the past and future of Cuba.

Calle ocho de Miami

If you walk along Calle Ocho it is essential that you enjoy a good Cuban coffee or the famous Guarapo, a type of juice based on sugar cane juice.

Along this famous street in Little Havana there is a very curious attraction for visitors, nothing more and nothing less than the Latin Walk of Fame in which the most prolific artists of this country are remembered:

• Andy Garcia
• Gloria Estefan
• Celia Cruz
• Julio Iglesias
• Sammy Sosa

Thalia's star on the Latin Walk of Fame

Other places of interest

Máximo Gómez Park

This place is a mandatory stop in Little Havana and there we will basically find a large number of elderly Latinos and Cubans playing dominoes and chess, which is why it is also known colloquially as Domino Park.

As a curiosity, we have learned that players follow very strict rules and can be expelled if they shout or speak badly to other players.

13th Avenue

To the south of Calle Ocho begins Avenida 13, a very quiet place in the Cuban neighborhood where we can find the Cuban Memorial Boulevard and it is the patriotic heart of the neighborhood.

On the walls of this avenue we can see graffiti and sculptures in honor of great figures in Cuban history such as the revolutionary poet José Martí or the war hero Antonio Maceo.

It is a perfect place to take a break after touring the lively Calle Ocho, because it is a very quiet, pleasant and cozy place.

Little Havana's Tower Theater

This is one of the oldest monuments in the city and was built in 1926. This historic theater has an Art Deco style and today shows films and shorts in Spanish or English. It is also common to see projects by filmmakers from Miami who are growing.

During the period when the Little Havana neighborhood was at its peak, this theater was the only movie theater in all of Miami where you could watch movies with Spanish subtitles.

Little Havana Cinema

To this day it continues to be one of the biggest tourist and leisure attractions of this city in southern Florida and is just 20 minutes by car from Park Royal Miami Beach, so we invite you to visit this unique neighborhood that, without a doubt, will not leave anyone indifferent.

But… what if Orlando is much more than that? In this article we show you from Park Royal Orlando that in this place there are authentic natural treasures that would leave you speechless and that, indeed, it is much more than a crowded and cosmopolitan city full of theme parks.

Crystal River Springs and Manatees

On the outskirts of Orlando are two of the most exciting natural sites in Florida, the springs "Crystal Spring" and "Three Sisters Spring" and it is that, apart from being one of the largest aquifers in Florida, there is a group of more than 400 manatees that live in the area each year when they migrate to this spring in search of warmth.

These springs are located in the small town of Crystal River, just outside from Orlando, which has a large expanse of natural waters where you will not only find the well-known “Crystal River manatees” but it is also possible to spot other animals such as ospreys, dolphins or even alligators.

Swim with the manatees

Every year, when the temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico drop, the manatees in the area move to warmer waters like those of Crystal River, and followed by a large number of nature lovers, tourists and local people, they lend themselves without any danger to share their baths with these people.
It is an incredible experience in which humans can feel more connected to nature thanks to these friendly mammals.

Death in Huichol mythology

Death in Huichol mythology

The Wixárika culture, commonly known as Huichol, is a sample of resistance of pre-Hispanic cultures. Their beliefs and rituals have survived historical attempts at conquest and extermination. They maintain a cosmogony in which death is one of the bridges that unite the divine with the human.

The Huichol maintain their own conception of the origin and history of humanity, which for them is “cosmic” or true. Their Gods are conceived as ancestors and are represented in colorful mosaics. In them we can find corn, peyote and deer as central figures.

These symbols show the way in which the Huichol conceive of death: as a transition process to return to divinity, to the cosmos. By considering the gods as ancestors, their dead relatives become semi-divinities.

The Huichol live integrated with the world of the sacred and coexisted with it through various mystical experiences represented in rituals. This causes them to establish a kinship between both worlds.

Despite the above, this culture does not celebrate the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead, as occurs in neighboring communities, but they do maintain a ceremony that is performed when someone dies.

They believe that, at the moment of death, the soul of the deceased begins a process to reunite with the whole. Then it becomes air or cloud over the heads of its relatives, which is why they consider the corpses sacred and untouchable.

Their conception of the death process is similar to other Mesoamerican groups, such as the Aztecs. The Wixaritari believe that upon death the soul must go through a difficult journey, full of trials, that leads it through five levels that descend to the underworld.

They believe that the first place where the soul meets its ancestors is in front of an amate tree. For the living, all contact with the dead is prohibited, so they build “ririkis”, which are small sanctuaries in which they protect the body along with ritual objects and representations of their gods.

The Huichol believe that the dead person returns to the earth after five years, now converted into rock crystal. But in case this does not happen, one way in which they can honor their dead and address them, as time passes, is through the ririkis themselves, who are located in what they know as “ranch of the dead”.

The Wixárika culture is located mainly in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. One way to get to get to know this community is through the “Huichol Route”, which begins on the beaches of these states. Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta is an excellent option to stay, because from this place you can go to the other points that make up the route, such as Rincón de Guayabitos, Punta Mita, Peñita de Jaltemba, Tepic and San Blas.

Halloween or Day of the Dead? Celebrate in Mexico

Halloween or Day of the Dead? Celebrate in Mexico

Halloween and Day of the Dead are two of the most fascinating and popular celebrations that go down in October. Despite their different cultural and geographic origins, these festivities have striking similarities and share the purpose of honoring the dead.

Halloween: A night of spooks and surprises

Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, is a Celtic tradition that has evolved into one of the most iconic celebrations in the world. The word "Halloween" comes from "All Hallows' Eve" or "Eve of All Saints." Originally, the Celts celebrated Samhain, a shindig marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter.

Day of the Dead: Honoring loved ones

Day of the Dead, mainly celebrated in Mexico from October 31st to November 2nd, is deeply rooted in Mexican culture. Its origins trace back to pre-Hispanic indigenous civilizations who revered their ancestors and believed in life after death.

Similarities between Halloween and Day of the Dead

Despite their differences in history and cultural focus, both celebrations have a central theme of honoring the deceased. While Halloween approaches more playfully, Day of the Dead treats it with respect and love, remembering beloved departed ones.

One thing to note about these festivities is that both promote family togetherness. On Halloween, this is reflected in the parties and the tradition of trick-or-treating, on the other hand, on Day of the Dead families come together to build altars in honor of loved ones who are no longer with us.

No matter what holiday we celebrate, Halloween and Day of the Dead remind us of the importance of enjoying these moments as a family while remembering those who are no longer with us.

In this regard, at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, we offer a wide range of activities for you to have a unique experience with your loved ones, such as:

- Pumpkin or sugar skull decorating
- Costume parties and contests
- Themed performances
- Pan de muerto (bread of the dead) tasting

The oldest city in the United States

Although Puerto Rico is considered legislatively free, it is actually an associated state of the United States, which is why, historically, this place with more than 500 years of history is today considered the oldest city in the United States.

Foundation of the city

Between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, the Spanish arrived in a tropical place in Central America inhabited by the Taíno Indians and called "Borikén" (which is why Puerto Ricans are also known today as "boricuas") led by Juan Ponce de León. Upon his arrival he founded the city of Cáparra, whose name arose in honor of his ancestry from Cáceres in Spain.

Years after its foundation, Cáparra was transferred to another place on the island due to the poor conditions of the original settlement and ended up being located on the aforementioned islet and taking the name “Puerto Rico” referring to a similar port in the Canary Islands. Finally, the name of San Juan was added to end up being called “San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico”.

The walled city

San Juan de Puerto RicoSan Juan de Puerto Rico is surrounded by a wall that was used to defend against attacks by enemy ships and armies.

This wall took more than 100 years to finish, since construction began in 1634 and it was not 100% finished until 1782. Its thickness is about 20 feet (approximately 6 meters) and to this day it remains one of the greatest attractions in the area.

The Fortress

The Palacio de Santa Catalina, also known as "La Fortaleza" is the first fortification to be built in San Juan at the beginning of the 16th century and was also used to defend against enemy attacks. This fortress was only invaded twice, once by the British and once by the Dutch.

The Fortress of San Juan

Currently, the curious thing about this building is that it is used as the residence and work offices of the Governor of Puerto Rico and is considered the oldest active executive building in the entire Western Hemisphere. Although it is a functional building today, guided tours for tourists are also organized to learn about the history of this place.

Princess Walk

The Paseo de la Princesa is a path that runs along the walls of San Juan but was built later, back in the 19th century and in honor of the Princess of Asturias of that time (Isabel II) who later would become Queen of Spain. Princess Walk

This walk allows you to take a tour of Viejo San Juan, taking in many of its most historic attractions and enjoying its old streetlights, trees, fruit carts, benches, and street performers. Undoubtedly a unique path that you can enjoy both as a family and as a romantic getaway and that concludes at the Raíces Fountain, a sculpture that represents the combined heritage of the Tainos, Africans, and Spanish.

The Gate of San Juan

This is the main entrance of the 5 that exist to the city of San Juan, it was built in 1635, so it is also the oldest gate of the walled city.

If you go to the door you can read an inscription in Latin that dictates the following: "Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini", that is, welcome those who come in the name of God. It is a very important and historical point on the island, which is why many tourists come every year to take pictures entering the oldest city in the United States.

The Morro de San Felipe

The Castle of San Felipe del Morro, also known simply as “el Morro” is a fortress located in the bay of San Juan and which began to be built in the 16th century to defend the city from enemy maritime attacks, although they were building additions to keep up with the military technology of the time until the 18th century.

The Morro de San Juan

In 1983 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and today it is one of the main attractions in all of Puerto Rico, as it retains incredible historical importance and is full of preserved items from the area's mixed conquests and ancestry. Papantla Flyers

Papantla Flyers

One of the Mexican states with the best preservation of traditions, culture and customs, enriches the cultural identity of our country. In this sense, we want to talk about a ceremony that has transcended borders: the Papantla flyers..

What is its origin?

The Papantla flyers have their roots in pre-Hispanic times, although an exact start date cannot be established. There is a legend that explains the beginning of this ceremonial dance.

As the story goes, during a dry season in Totonacapan (currently on the border between Puebla and Veracruz), a group of wise men asked young virgins to find the tallest tree to use in a ritual that included dance and music. The ceremony was performed at the top of the trunk, in the belief that faith-filled prayers would reach the gods who protected them from above.

With the purpose of asking the gods for mercy and bringing back the rains and fertility of the earth, the ritual was carried out. Since then, the ceremony has been held annually as thanks to the gods.

What does the ritual consist of?

The Papantla flyers, also known as Earth Birds, perform an annual fertility ritual. The foreman, guide of the dancers, begins the ceremony looking for the appropriate tree.

Once the tree is found, all the participants dance around it, inclining their bodies while they expel burning water in the 4 cardinal points. The tree trunk is then cut and filed, and raised to a height of 18 to 30 meters using jars for support. There is a belief that the tree should not touch the ground, as it would bring bad luck.

Then a hole is dug in the ground to bury the trunk and a rope ladder is placed so that the dancers can climb to the top. An altar is also placed with offerings to the gods, such as white flowers, tobacco, incense, bean tamales, candles, holy water, brandy and two masks representing the owners of the dance.

The Papantla flyers salute the Sun and ask for the arrival of rain and the fertilization of the earth. Each of the 4 dancers symbolizes one of the cardinal points, and when they descend to the ground, it represents the fall of rain.

Highlighted Features

The 4 dancers represent the cardinal points, while the caporal, who plays the flute and drum, symbolizes the center of the earth.

During the ceremony, the young people climb the pole, made from the freshly cut trunk, at a height of 18 to 40 meters. Sitting at the top, the foreman plays the flute and the drum in honor of the Sun. The flyers jump into the void supported by ropes, imitating the flight of birds. They gradually descend to the ground, thus ending the ceremony.

voladores de papantla doing the ritual

The Papantla flyers, known as "the city of noisy birds", are recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This beautiful tradition from Veracruz highlights the importance of the Totonac identity in Mexico.

Typical costume of Papantla Flyer

The Papantla flyers wear a conical hat with a quetzal-shaped plume, a white shirt adorned with mirrors representing the sun's rays, colored ribbons symbolizing the rainbow, flowers woven on the chest and belt as a symbol of fertility, and red pants that represent the blood of the deceased dancers.

The dance of the Papantla flyers is a valuable tradition for Mexicans and a heritage for all humanity. We hope these customs continue to enhance the richness of our national identity over time.

Papantla Flyers in Puerto Vallarta

Where to see these Papantla flyers? In Puerto Vallarta it is possible to appreciate and live a ritual declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco. This captivating event takes place in the central square of the Malecón every day at 6:00 pm. The Typical Dances in Mexico: History and Traditions

The Typical Dances in Mexico: History and Traditions

In Mexico, our cultural diversity is reflected in a variety of traditions, languages, and typical and folkloric dances that represent each state of the Mexican Republic. These dances were born with the purpose of representing the Mexican identity and we find them present in civic events, national festivities such as September 15 and November 20, as well as patron saint festivities.

The variety of rhythms in this country is impressive, with fast dances and slower ones, but all of them with a rich history that adds to the Mexican culture.

In this article, we will introduce you to some of the most important typical dances in Mexico, many of which have been influenced by other cultures and are currently practiced in various academies for teaching and dissemination.

The Huapango

Originally from the Huasteca region, the Huapango is one of the most exciting folk dances in Mexico. It arose during the colonial period with the arrival of gypsy and flamenco influences in the region. The dance is characterized by its rapid stomping to the rhythm of jaranas, violins and harps.

Dance of the Fish

As a tribute to the fishermen and their work on the coasts of Michoacán and Guerrero, the famous Dance of the Fish arises. This dance dates back to pre-Hispanic times, where it was performed as a ritual to request good catches. The dancers carry a large fish on their shoulders and wear traditional clothing from the coast, along with masks that represent the scars of their trade.

Mexican Dance

Also known as the Aztec dance, this is an ancient dance that has managed to take root, thanks to the fact that it was kept secret during colonization. It was practiced as part of the rituals and religious ceremonies of the Mesoamerican indigenous civilizations. The dancers jump to the rhythm of drums and shells, while a sacred offering is made at the end of the dance.

Jarabe Tapatio

The Jarabe Tapatío is one of the best-known typical dances in Mexico. It has its roots in the gypsy “jarabe” of Spain, but Mexicans have adopted its rhythm, stomping, and movements from other local dances. This dance has gone from being prohibited in the past to representing an act of courtship in the present. The men wear charro suits, while the women don colorful, full-skirted dresses.

Dance of the Elderly

This peculiar dance was part of a sacred ritual of the Purépecha empire in Michoacán. Celebrated four times a year to invoke harvest prosperity, the dance is performed with slow, smooth movements. The dancers carry canes and form a line, increasing the rhythm of their steps as the music progresses. One of them falls to the ground several times while the others help him up and continue.

Dance of the Elderly

The Northern Polka

It is a traditional dance that originated in Europe, specifically among the Germans who immigrated to the north of Mexico and the south of the United States, in Texas, during the 19th century. These immigrants brought with them musical instruments such as the accordion, saxophone and bajo sexto, as well as the rhythm of the European polka, which was danced in elegant parlors in pairs. However, the indigenous people of the region adopted this dance and gave it a unique Mexican style, turning it into the well-known "Polka Mexicana". This musical genre took root in the northern states of Mexico, such as Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Sonora, Coahuila and Baja California, as well as in other border states and the North Zone of the country. Discover more about the energetic and popular Polka Norteña in our guide.

La Bamba, Veracruz

La Bamba is a folk dance originally from the beautiful state of Veracruz, known as Son Jarocho and one of the most representative dances in the Mexican Republic. Instruments such as the harp, the guitar and the marimba give rhythm to this style of dance. However, among the best known dances, the one that symbolizes Veracruz both nationally and internationally is "La Bamba", considered the anthem of Veracruz. This dance, traditionally performed by a single couple, fuses the Spanish Seguidillas and Fandangos dance styles with the Cuban Zapateados and Guajiras. Its origin dates back to the arrival of the Spanish in Veracruz in the 17th century. Discover more about the traditional costume of Veracruz and the rich history of La Bamba in our guide.

Oaxaca Pineapple Flower

Surprisingly, the Flor de Piña dance, although not as well known outside of Mexico, is one of the most representative of the state of Oaxaca. This dance originated in the municipality of San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec thanks to the idea of the governor Alfonso Pérez Gasga in 1958. It was thought that the jarocho costumes were not suitable for the state of Oaxaca, so the teacher Paulina Solís was commissioned to design an indigenous choreography for the song "Flor de Piña", composed by the Oaxacan Don Samuel Mondragón This choreography is performed exclusively by women and represents the indigenous woman Tu xtepeca, symbolizing the joy for the good harvest of the pineapple. Oaxacans can confirm this interpretation! Explore more about the fascinating dance of the Pineapple Flower in our guide.

The typical dances in Mexico are a historical treasure and constitute part of the cultural heritage of this country. Are you going to stay without knowing them? From Park Royal we give you the opportunity to celebrate these Mexican dances with us at the best price. Visit Mexico and have fun stomping

Puerto Rico and its luminescent beaches

Puerto Rico and its luminescent beaches

Why visit Humacao and what to do in the capital of Puerto Rico? Humacao is famous for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, its warm and sunny weather (all year round!), makes the beaches of Puerto Rico a popular destination for both tourists and locals.

Most of the beaches in Puerto Rico have white sands and crystal clear waters, ideal for sunbathing, water sports and enjoying the natural beauty of the island. However, when night falls, three of its most beautiful beaches become an impressive light show.

What is the reason for the brightness of these Puerto Rican beaches? The reason is unicellular microorganisms called dinoflagellates, which produce that ethereal neon blue-green light, as a result of the process of photosynthesis and/or defense mechanism (for example, when touched with hands or moved by fish).

This wonderful natural phenomenon, called bioluminescence, occurs on several beaches around the world, although they are not very numerous. However, the island of Puerto Rico has three luminescent beaches: Bahía de Mosquito en Vieques, Laguna Grande in Fajardo and La Parguera Bay in Lajas.

These bays are considered some of the most impressive in the world due to their high concentration of dinoflagellates. The luminescent beaches of Puerto Rico are a unique and spectacular tourist attraction that offers an unforgettable experience for those looking to enjoy this natural beauty.

If you want to enjoy the glow of these luminescent beaches in Puerto Rico, you have to know that it will depend on several factors, such as the concentration of unicellular microorganisms and/or the amount of light pollution. Don't worry! We leave you some tips:
• The luminescence does not have seasonality on the beaches of Puerto Rico, therefore, it can be seen throughout the year!
Avoid nights with a full moon: the less light, the better you will be able to appreciate the blue-green light of the dinoflagellates.
• Try to know the % of brightness in previous days: the temperature and the tides affect this ecosystem of microorganisms, it is better to see them when their brightness is higher than 30%.

Do you know Mosquito Beach in Puerto Rico?

Mosquito Bay or Mosquito Beach is located on a small island called Vieques, east of Puerto Rico. Despite its size, this bay, due to its closed mouth and shallow water, is one of the best places to see this unique natural phenomenon.
Mosquito Beach is one of the brightest in the world, as indicated by its entry in the Guinness Book of Records! How can you experience it with your own eyes? An organized kayak or boat trip is the best way to do it.

Discover La Parquera in Lajas

La Parguera is a beautiful and picturesque bay located in the municipality of Lajas, on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico. It is known for its impressive mangrove ecosystem and crystal clear, turquoise waters, making it a popular destination for those looking to enjoy nature and the sea.
This bay was the first luminescent beach discovered in Puerto Rico, although it is the least bright of the three, it does not detract from its great beauty. You can enjoy the glow of its microorganisms in a kayak or in a boat with a transparent bottom.

Laguna Grande de Fajardo

Laguna Grande is located in Fajardo, east of the island of Puerto Rico. This mangrove ecosystem, characteristic of this lagoon, feeds the microorganisms that are responsible for bioluminescence. It is the first most visited luminescent beach in Puerto Rico, due to its proximity and the second most resplendent!
There are several companies that offer night excursions to experience bioluminescence in the Laguna Grande. Visitors can paddle out in kayaks or motor boats to explore the bay and enjoy the natural beauty of this fascinating phenomenon.

Tu hogar en Park Royal Homestay Club Cala Puerto Rico

If you want to enjoy the luminescent beaches in Puerto Rico, Park Royal Homestay Club Cala Puerto Rico is the perfect hotel. Located in Humacao between two golf courses (great plan to do during the day) it offers a variety of spaces and services ideal for a totally pleasant stay.
Visit us and choose among the 104 perfectly equipped rooms and enjoy the spa and gym. In addition, you can relax in its outdoor pools or practice sports in the open air, such as tennis, paddle tennis and/or take a bicycle route.

Isla Mujeres, the Magic Town

Isla Mujeres, the Magic Town

Isla Mujeres is located in a privileged point of the Yucatan peninsula, just 13 km from the tourist city of Cancun, both belong to the state of Quintana Roo. This island bathes in the Caribbean Sea, where you will bathe in crystal clear, warm and transparent waters.
Why is it called Isla Mujeres? Because of the multitude of statuettes of women found in it. Mayan women made a pilgrimage to this island and asked Ixche, goddess of fertility and the moon, fertility, a good birth and long life, offering her a statuette in the shape of a woman.
How can you get to this paradise island? You can take a ferry from Puerto Juárez and if you travel by car, take the ferry from Punta Sam. Now that you know how to get there, we will tell you the must-sees of this magical island.

Things you can do in Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres was listed as a Magical Town in 2015 due to its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historical importance. Lover of natural phenomena? Do not miss the sunrises on Isla Mujeres from the dawn cliff or the sunsets from any of its beaches (Centro, North, Albatros, Tiburón and/or Lancheros beaches).

group of young people paddle surfing in isla mujeres

Discover Hidalgo street, the fertility statue and the rainbow stairs of Isla Mujeres

Isla mujeres is an island that can be explored in half an hour, rent a bike, motorbike or golf cart. However, be sure to enjoy the Caribbean atmosphere, its gastronomy and some of the must-sees that we will tell you below.
Calle Hidalgo is a pedestrian street in the center of the island, where you will find musicians, ice cream parlors, cafes, craft shops, restaurants, and bars. Enjoy touring it at any time of the day or night.
Visit the contemporary statue of the goddess Ixchel, located in the Mayan ruins (we'll tell you a little more about them in the next section) in the south of the island. This statue is in his temple, near the cliff.
Enjoy the art street and the Rainbow Stairs (perhaps one of the most photographed places on the island), each step is painted in various shades of colors and some of them with written words. Where can you find it? Leave the boardwalk on its west side and enter the inner streets.

Water activities in Isla Mujeres: snorkeling, diving and paddle surfing

Isla Mujeres offers various outdoor activities, some of which are enjoyed in the waters of the Caribbean Sea, its marine fauna and the largest barrier reef in the world.
Let's go snorkeling! Activity that will allow you to see rays, barracuda and hopefully turtles and dolphins. You can do it from:
• Manchones Reef: it has a depth of 10m and is in front of Punta Sur
• El Farito Reef: near the island and next to the abandoned lighthouse
• Sac Bajo Reef: small but impressive reef
• Sunken ship: different experience and is located in front of Isla Mujeres
• El meco: shallow waters with sculptures of fingers

Diving is another aquatic activity that you can practice in Isla Mujeres, the reefs are shallow and with little or no current, which makes it suitable for all levels. The attraction of diving in Isla Mujeres is swimming with whale sharks, diving cenotes or even night diving.
Do you know paddle surfing? You stand on a surfboard and steer and propel it with a paddle or paddle. You do not need experience to practice it, just a desire to enjoy and have a good time. The good thing about this activity is that by standing up, you have a different perspective of the landscape and you can see the bottom of the sea more clearly.

Visit the underwater museum and swim with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres

The sculptures of the Underwater Museum of Art or MUSA can be seen from the depths of the sea (diving) or the surface (snorkeling or a boat with a transparent cover). The sculptures have a double function: aesthetics and promote coral growth due to the materials and cavities with which they are created.
We continue in the depths of the sea, this time to swim with the whale sharks. Don't be scared! They are completely docile fish, feed on plankton and are comfortable with humans. It is a protected species in Mexico, therefore, do not touch or feed them. The best time to see the biggest fish in the ocean between May and August. Also, if you are a lover of these giants, do not miss, the festival is dedicated to them between the months of June and July.

Hotels near Isla Mujeres: Grand Park Royal Cancun and Park Royal Beach Cancun

The hotels and resorts Grand Park Royal Cancún and Park Royal Beach Cancún are only 15 minutes from the pier where you can take the ferry to go to Isla Mujeres.
Our hotels have all the comforts you need to spend an unforgettable vacation: all-inclusive service and children's area, are some of the services they offer you. Also, you will be able to carry out activities that you cannot miss while in Cancun and enjoy the best of the best beaches in Cancun.

Walk through the Art Deco District of Miami

Walk through the Art Deco District of Miami

Walk through the Art Deco District of Miami
Before taking a walk around this famous neighborhood, do you want to know the characteristics of art deco or decorative art? This artistic movement originated in France and became popular during the period from 1920 to 1939 (in some countries, even up to 1950). Art Deco is inspired by the first avant-garde, the Bauhaus school and the archaeological discoveries of Egyptian art .

Miami's Art Deco District is listed on the 1979 National Register of Historic Places . No surprise, as this district spans about 30 city blocks and features over 800 Art Deco-style hotels and residential buildings (perfectly preserved). They are buildings with symmetrical, fractional and geometric shapes, in pastel colors, with neon signs and many ornamental elements .

The most emblematic buildings of the Art Deco District in Miami
The Art Deco District in Miami, also known as the Architectural Historic District, is located at the southern end of South Beach . Our tour will visit the most important sites located between Ocean Drive, Collins and Washington avenues.

You are ready? We start with the Art Deco District Welcome Center , where you can get information, guides and buy some souvenirs. Next, we go down Ocean Drive to visit the Park Central, Colony, Victor, and Leslie hotels (among some of them). Thirsty? We can sit in any bar to have a cold drink before continuing with our tour.

Are we ready to continue? Now we head to Washington Avenue to see Miami Beach Main Post Office and Astor Hotel . There is little left to do, we take Collins Avenue, where we will find Haddon Hall, The Hotel and Essex House . Do you feel like ending the walk resting on the beach? Let's go and take the opportunity to discover the colorful guardhouses .

Art deco style lifeguard booth in Miami Beach

Visit the Art Deco Museum
The Miami Museum of Art Deco , located at 1001 Ocean Drive, houses three permanent and one temporary exhibitions . Permanent exhibits run through Miami's different architectural styles: Art Deco, Mediterranean, and Miami Modern (MiMo). This museum has models of buildings, which allows you to appreciate their features and ornamental details more closely.

This museum created by MDPL (Miami Design Preservation League) wants to teach its visitors the architectural heritage, its conservation and the community culture of Miami. In addition, it is a Welcome Center, that is, they can help you book tours, hotels, adventures and much more.

A very interesting project produced by this museum is Miami Beach Visual Memoirs, which exposes the biographies of people who have been part of the history of Miami Beach. If you have a couple of hours to spare, don't miss it!

Enjoy the art deco festival in Miami
Art Deco Weekend is a festival that is held on Ocean Drive and Lummus Park, it has more than 45 years behind it and is organized by MDPL . This event, which lasts three days, aims to preserve Art Deco and the buildings that represent it in Miami, so that future generations can continue to enjoy this legacy.

During the festival several tours are organized, in which they will explain and learn about:
• The architecture of the buildings on Ocean Drive,
• Hotels, bas-reliefs and terrazzo floors,
• Night tour of art deco buildings and neon lights.

The offer of activities is not limited to tours, you can also enjoy: live music, exhibitions, movies, dances, markets and many more. If you come as a family or with dogs, they have a children's area and activities to walk with them and discover the Art Deco District of Miami.

Also on this ride, you will be able to cross “El Jorullo,” considered the longest suspension vehicular bridge in the world.

FLYBOARDS

One of the best sports in recent years combined the water output from a jet ski and diverted it through a connected hose to a board with jet skis on the bottom. Riders can easily defy the laws of gravity with this innovative extreme sport. Once you master the balance on the board you will be able to make out turns and fly several meters above the sea level. This is an exciting adventure that you cannot miss!

SKYDIVE

Well, instead of imagining it, do it for real! In Puerto Vallarta, there are many places where you can carry out this activity. It does not matter if you are a beginner or a pro, you are always assisted by an expert.

RAPPEL DESCENTS

One of the best ways to know much more about Puerto Vallarta’s jungle is to enjoy it from the inside with rappel descents. If you like adrenaline, you will love to do rappelling down the steep rocky walls of the majestic Sierra Madre. This experience will allow you to live and feel the flora and fauna of the place.

FLYING WITH ZIP LINES

Another great activity is to feel the adrenaline rush through your body while you descend at great speed all the way across Puerto Vallarta’s jungle. Once you arrive on land, enjoy the natural water slides and pools that this extraordinary place has to offer.

Surfing beaches near Puerto Vallarta

Surfing beaches near Puerto Vallarta

Get seduced by its magic!
One of the best things about traveling is the opportunity to get to know new places that you never knew you could be amazed by. Sometimes it is enough to walk a few meters to discover that charming garden that rarely appears in social media trends, or that coffee shop that has the most beautiful view and a comfortable space to spend an afternoon with a good book.
That kind of magic is also alive on the Mexican beaches and especially in Puerto Vallarta , the Park Royal Hotels & Resorts destination of this newsletter, where just a few kilometers away you will find three iconic beaches with a relaxed vibe, perfect for water sports and, especially, surfing.

Sayulita

To reach this destination, we recommend renting a car upon our arrival at Puerto Vallarta airport, since Sayulita is located in Nayarit, approximately 1.5 hours from Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta.
Sayulita is a pleasant surprise that you will remember forever. As soon as you arrive at the main square, you will experience an authentic surfing town full of colors, music, and different cultural expressions in a party environment.
Sayulita Beach is perfect for the most intrepid surfers who love to chase the Mexican Pacific's most challenging waves, where even on calm days, you will find waves that surpass the ten-foot mark. In addition, in the surrounding areas, you will find a wide offer of surfboard rentals and lessons for all ages and levels.
Once you finish, we are sure you will want to relax and enjoy some international food, or maybe visit one of the handicraft stores, the decision is up to you, but don't take off your bathing suit because the adventure continues!

Los Muertos Beach

Just 800 meters from Sayulita's main beach and along the coast, a pleasant walkway leads you to a small white gazebo, perfect for taking pictures.
A few meters ahead, the scenario will change completely and you will enter a small cemetery that welcomes you with a gate embellished with typical mortuary decorations such as the "Catrina" When looking up you will find the traditional "papel picado" of the Day of the Dead, which is so typical of the Mexican culture. Once you arrive here, just follow the main road that crosses the cemetery to a small and hidden beach surrounded by plants

Welcome to Los Muertos Beach.

Contrary to Sayulita, here you won't find high waves and no restaurants or bars around, only an open sea with gentle waves perfect for families where some locals also have umbrellas and tables for rent so you can spend a pleasant afternoon on this magical beach.

San Pancho Beach

After visiting Los Muertos Beach, it's time to drive 20 minutes to another nearby beach known as San Pancho where again you will find high waves and beachfront seafood restaurants.
The best thing about this destination, besides its delicious gastronomic, is its beach which, besides having perfect waves for surfing, is very uncrowded and offers the most beautiful sunsets of the destination. To end the day, walk around San Pancho and be amazed by the kindness of the locals and the small bars set with bossa nova or live jazz, we are sure you will want to come back soon to this charming place.
Once you return to Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta, we will be waiting for you in one of our ocean-view rooms, so you will remember that the Mexican Pacific always has something incredible to offer and we at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, will be there to witness the best moments of your vacation with those you love the most.
To relax from your trip, you can request something from our menu through our Room Service, or even schedule a massage in the spa. The trip is all yours and we are here to spoil you as you deserve.
We are looking forward to seeing you!

The legacy of the Mexican Mayan ruins

The legacy of the Mexican Mayan ruins

We start with a little history (just a little). The Mayan culture was one of the most important Mesoamerican civilizations, as shown by its writing system, art, architecture, and its knowledge of astronomy and mathematics.

It developed in part of what we know today as Central America (specifically in Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico) and covers the period between 2000 B.C. until 1527 AD.

They were organized in cities, where political and religious power was united, and their most representative buildings are stone temples in the shape of a scaled pyramid. In addition, they were characterized by their colored walls.

Tulum, the Mayan ruins on the sea

The archaeological zone of Tulum T is located on a cliff above the Caribbean Sea, in the state of Quintana Roo. These Mayan ruins are one of the most visited, due to its beauty and its amazing views of the turquoise waters that surround it.

This site was an important center of worship of the so-called Descending God, associated with rain, the Sun at sunset and/or Venus. Some of the buildings found in these Mayan ruins are:

• The Grand Palace
• The House of Columns
• The House of Halach Ulnic
• The House of the Cenote
• The castle
• The palace
• Temple of the Descending God
• Temple of the Frescoes

The ruins are open every day and you have to pay to visit it. We recommend that after touring them, you enjoy its beach with turquoise waters and the majestic Mayan ruins of Tulum, as a setting.

Discover one of the Mayan ruins on the island of Cozumel

The Mayan ruins of San Gervasio are located several kilometers from San Miguel de Cozumel, also in the State of Quintana Roo, this small archaeological zone was a pilgrimage center to worship the Goddess Ixchel.

The site is made up of a set of architectural buildings with low structures, a square and linked by white paths, among some of which stand out:

• Manitas Building
• Chillán Nah Temple (or small house)
• The Alamo Building
• Palace
• The Ossuary
• The Pilasters
• Nohoch Nah Temple (or great house)
Other Mayan ruins that you can find on the Island of Cozume, El Cedral, the first Mayan settlement on the island, is located near a church, where the Fiesta de la Santa Cruz is celebrated every May.

woman in the mayan ruins in mexico

The amazing ruins of Chichén Itzá

This archaeological zone was considered one of the 7 New Wonders of the World in 2007, it is one of the most visited and is located in Pisté, on the Yucatan peninsula.

It was a sacred city and pilgrimage center, created by water sorcerers in the 5th century AD. Some of the most emblematic buildings are:

• Chinchen Itza Pyramid
• The ball game (juego de la pelota)
• Tzompantli
• Platform of the eagles and jaguars
• Venus Platform
• Temple of the Warriors
• The group of a thousand columns
• The Market
• The sacred Cenote
• The Temazcal
• The Ossuary
• The House of the Deer
• The Chinchanchob or Red House

It opens every day and various events take place. We recommend the night show, where you can visit these Mayan ruins when the sun goes down and enjoy amazing lights, images and sounds.Visit the official website of https://www.chichenitza.com

Cobá: the Mayan ruins of Playa del Carmen

You can find The archaeological site of Cobá in the Yucatán peninsula, in the state of Quintan Roo. This city controlled smaller populations, which explains the agricultural corridors and water sources found in its surroundings.

The beauty of these Mayan ruins is their location in the middle of the jungle, the buildings are well preserved and it is easy to access them. The Nohoch Mul pyramid stands out, one of the highest in the Yucatan peninsula.

Why should you visit it? It is one of the least visited ruins, so you can enjoy it at your own pace, climb to the top of the Nohoch Mul pyramid and be surprised by its views and its proximity to the city of Valladolid and several cenotes.

Enjoy and respect the natural beauties of the earth

Enjoy and respect the natural beauties of the earth

There is nothing more exciting than admiring and getting to know the nature that our land has to offer. And we’re sure, that on every traveler's bucket list is to visit a coral reef and/or a unique natural wonder, such as the cenotes.

Reefs are popular for their beauty and vibrant colors, but apart from this, they are extremely important ecologically. These jungles of the sea are one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, hosting up to 25% of the total marine biodiversity that exists in the oceans. And cenotes are just as important, as they are vital for biological diversity, providing water and habitat for insects, reptiles, mammals, birds, fish, and plants.

Today, raising awareness about the protection of these places is more important than ever. Our planet has faced serious environmental problems and threats, so today, to enjoy it and to be able to continue exploring it, it’s important to follow certain rules and act responsibly.

Luckily, we bring for you the next recommendations when visiting a cenote and/or reef area to continue enjoying and living responsibly with the environment:

• Do not touch, chase, stress, or feed marine life. And please don't even think about extracting flora and fauna from the area you visit.
• Do not touch, step, or rest on the coral structure. Remember that they needed several years to grow. And also, when you enter or exit the water, make sure you do so without touching the coral reefs.
• If you use fins for diving or snorkeling, be sure not to hit the corals or stir up sediment. The view is just as impressive from a safe distance from them.
• Do not take flash photography of marine life, as you can seriously damage their eyesight.
• Don't forget to use a biodegradable sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Those containing zinc oxide or titanium oxide damage reefs.
• When booking, choose boats or motorboats that use mooring buoys and are responsible for their waste.
• Remember that your financial contribution will be used for the maintenance of the protected natural area, so it is important to ask for your ticket or bracelet.
• Have you seen how easy it is to take care of our planet while having an incredible experience with nature?

Earth hour

Earth hour

Park Royal Hotels and Resorts join the Earth Hour campaign to raise awareness among the population with specific actions that will help counteract the impact of climate change on the planet.

16 years ago, an initiative came to stay raising awareness among the population and thus give planet earth a break by not consuming electricity for 60 minutes. Earth Hour is a global activity promoted and conceived by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Leo Burnett advertising agency that was born in the distant 2007 in the city of Sydney, Australia.

This is how this symbolic gesture that began in Oceania quickly spread throughout the world. It is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic climate actions to protect planet earth and that generates a great impact that consists of turning off the lights of buildings and monuments for an hour.

In this way on Saturday, March 25th all our Park Royal Hotels And Resorts will unite this noble action for the care of our planet, symbolically turning off the lights for 10 minutes and inviting guests to form with candles the "60+" as a way of joining this initiative.

Earth Hour campaign

Actions to join this initiative

At Park Royal Hotels And Resorts, we give you a series of recommendations that you can carry out throughout the year, which will make the world a cleaner and more emission-free place.

• Disconnect from everything and relax, take the opportunity to exercise, talk, and reflect
• Organize eco-reunions with family or friends using candles, lamps, lanterns, and battery-powered radios
• Attend any event using clean transportation such as bicycles, skates, skateboards, scooters or just running or walking
• Change the incandescent light bulbs in your home for low-consumption ones and use natural light for as long as possible
• Keep hot water in a thermos instead of constantly using the microwave
• Take your food in reusable containers, so you will reduce unnecessary plastic waste • Plant trees in your garden or propose to do it around your home and work
• Save water by taking short showers and don't leave the tap running while you brush your teeth
• Always carry reusable bags

Take care of the environment

When you go to the beach, take a disposable garbage bag with you: water bottles, snack packages, napkins, etc. This way you will avoid the temptation to leave it lying around.

At the hotel, you can follow the recommendations for saving water by using the same towel and the same sheets during your stay.

In hotel restaurants, serve only what you are going to consume. Did you know that about 1,300 million tons of food are wasted every year in the world? Let's take care of our planet and its resources.

At Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, we know that this type of intentional action will put us all on the right track to give our planet a healthier future.

Soccer an Argentine passion

Soccer an Argentine passion

The sport arrived in Buenos Aires in 1840 to become the favorite of the entire nation. They were the most advanced disciples that the English (cradle of world soccer) had.

Its professional league quickly became a hotbed of great players. From the youth categories they managed to put the nation in the foreground by winning 6 World Cups in the Sub-20 category (79, 95, 97, 2001, 2005, and 2007), 2 Esperanza de Toulon Tournaments (75 and 98), 4 South American Sub-20 (60, 64, 80, 2004), 2 Odesur Games (82 and 86), 7 Pan American Games (51, 55, 59, 71, 95, 2003 and 2019), 1 Futsal World Cup (indoor soccer) achieved in the 2016 World Cup and a runner-up in Lithuania 2021.

Argentines celebrating the victory in Qatar

Glory came in 2022 when the Argentina National Team (America's Cup Champion) played the Finalissima Match against Italy (European Cup Champion). The Albiceleste defeated the Azzurri 3-0 at the mythical Wembley.

And that would not be all, led by a plethoric Lionel Messi, Argentina won its third World Cup in Qatar 2022, defeating its French counterpart on penalties. This triumph added to the two previous ones achieved in 1978 and 1986. In 04 and 08 they won the Olympic gold medal, and the 15 title of America's Cup
(Called earlier South American Cup).

Soccer is part of Argentina's national identity for several reasons: it is the country with the most federated players (more than 900,000); It is the sport most practiced by the male and female population; nine out of ten inhabitants are supporters of a soccer team and, as if that were not enough, June 22 is the Day of the Argentine Soccer Player, while August 21 is the Day of the Argentine Soccer Players.

For Argentines, soccer isn't a sport; it's a religion, which is professed from childhood on both improvised and official pitches.

The city with the most stadiums in the world
Another fact that supports his passion for soccer is that Buenos Aires is considered the city with the most soccer stadiums in the world, it's only 18. When you visit Buenos Aires, take a tour of Boca Juniors La Bombonera and River Plate's El Monumental.

Soccer complements
El asado or barbecue is a tradition where friends and family taste different types of grilled meat such as Vacio, bife de chorizo, criollo chorizo and empanadas accompanied by a glass of good wine while enjoying a soccer match.

Music in the street Caminito of Buenos Aires

Music is another activity that is related to soccer. Various Argentine musical genres have sung to the soccer sport and other idols such as Maradona. The most prominent are rock and tango, also folkloric rhythms such as carnavalito, samba, cueca, gato and malambro, among others.

In this 2023, vibrate in the Argentine capital by staying at Park Royal City Buenos Aires, a hotel with an excellent location in the center of the city, very close to the main attractions, bars, restaurants, galleries, and of course the stadiums of La Bombonera (at 6.1 km) and El Monumental (at 10 km). Its suites offer all the comforts to recover energy after walking around this vibrant city.

Tangos and milongas: a journey through the Argentinean music

Tangos and milongas: a journey through the Argentinean music

Argentina is characterized for being a country where the music is in every corner, and the rhythm is rooted in history; from the sounds of a soft tango to thunderous rock, music has always been present in its people.

And to delve a little deeper into Argentina's culture, we'll take a brief look at the music.

Tango:
Argentina's best-known musical genre is tango, full of sensual beats that create a unique atmosphere as dancers take to the dance floor.

Tango expresses love, desire, and tragedies through the dancers’ bodies, and is typically danced with a partner. Walks, high heels move, and lounges are some of the most famous movements to enjoy this popular Argentinian genre.

It is believed that tango originated in the 19th century, and the golden age was between 1920 and 1950.

The musical roots of tango range from Afro-Latin sounds, through the gaucho culture, to the mix of Spanish and Italian rhythms. It is worth mentioning that in 2009, it was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. National Tango Day is celebrated on December 11th

Main singers: Carlos Gardel, Julio de Caro, Enrique Santos Discépolo, among others.

Couple dancing milonga

Milonga:
It is a folk music genre born in the Rio de la Plata region, and is related to the tango; however, the milonga is more cheerful, and the lyrics speak of everyday life in a more lighthearted way.

The Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges declared that he preferred the milonga, because the tango was too melancholic for his tast.

Main singers: Alfredo Zitarrosa, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Argentino Luna and Suma Paz.

Cumbia villera:
Born in the late 90s in the slums of Argentina, the cumbia villera gained recognition and popularity among the people thanks to lyrics addressing social issues, such as the repression associated with the lower classes.

However, the contagious rhythm of cumbia villera has managed to break taboos and be recognized as a characteristic sound of Argentina.

Main bands: Amar Azul, Damas gratis, Flor de piedra, Mala fama entre otras.

La Murga:
Murga is carnival music, born in the streets and originated in Afro-Latin rhythms. The Auténticos Decadentes perfectly portrayed the joy of the melody in their song El Murguero.

At the time, this genre so representative of urban culture, was banned by the last dictatorship, but this musical expression didn't disappear, it was only renewed when freedom came to the country..

  Rock:
We cannot stop talking about this musical genre in Argentina, since the 60s, this country has been one of the main exponents of rock in Spanish.

The Argentine influence has left a significant mark on the world of music, as the combination of traditional rock rhythms with Latin passion, opened the door to a wave of new groups and singers that expressed the feelings of a growing nation, breaking schemes and boundaries, to become a national identity.

Main bands: Soda Stereo, Los Abuelos de la Nada, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Los Enanitos verdes among others.

A show that exposes the relevance of Argentine rock in the world is 'Rompan Todo', which you can find on Netflix.

At Park Royal City Buenos Aires, we hope the light music notes will make you want to get to know Argentina's vibrant culture.

From the famous Netflix series, straight to your taste buds:

From the famous Netflix series, straight to your taste buds: "Las chicas de la tres" and the best potato omelet in Buenos Aires"

Pato and Romi are a couple from Buenos Aires, who not just share a love story, but also have a passion for gastronomy, which has made them famous not only in their hometown, Buenos Aires but also in thousands of homes around the world.

Want to know how they made it?

Keep reading and learn one more reason why this 2023 you must visit Buenos Aires and let yourself fall in love with the stories of this country and its people.

Cheese, cheese, and more cheese!
Argentina is a country whose gastronomy, thanks to European immigration, has adopted different dishes in its daily life, therefore it is not surprising that throughout the country we visitors can find in restaurants, bars, and even cafeterias, not only juicy meat cuts but also dishes such as pizza, empanadas, pasta, lasagnas, etc.

Now, stop for a moment and think about what these dishes have in common, and you will soon come to the delicious conclusion that cheese is the DNA of all of them. Watching the mozzarella cheese stretch from side to side is an experience that no one can miss, especially not inside a potato omelet prepared in the Central Market of Buenos Aires by the Chicas de la 3, Romi, and Pato.

An eye-catching aisle
After a random meeting at a soccer game, Pato, the heiress and passionate chef of the family business met Romi, who soon after was included in the business located in the Central Market of Buenos Aires.

Romi arrived with new ideas, which at the beginning were not completely adopted by the customers, but in a short time, they managed to consolidate and popularize the business thanks to a potato, ham, and cheese omelet that became known by market traders and important chefs who came to the Central Market in search of the freshest ingredients for their preparations and, of course, along the way, they also took the time to taste the best potato omelet in Buenos Aires according to chef Narda Lepes who gave them the name "Las Chicas" and Pato and Romi, complemented with "de la 3", due to its location, which is precisely inside the Central Market in pavilion 3.

The 3 girls on Netflix

A worldwide success
Street Food, a popular Netflix series where chapter by chapter you will know heartwarming stories around the world about food, has chosen for its Latin American edition the story of Pato and Romi, who thanks to its popular dish earned a place in this production, which made hundreds, and perhaps thousands of people around the world, take this place as a popular one to visit on their trips to Buenos Aires.

One of Pato's most iconic phrases during the making of the documentary is that "people eat first through the eyes, then through the mouth and finally through the heart" and we are sure that this phrase is not only true, but also a wise one, and we want to invite you not only to watch the episode on the popular streaming site but also to experience it with your own eyes and taste it with all your senses on your next trip to Argentina's capital city.

Pato y Romi's venue is located 20 km from Park Royal City Buenos Aires and our advice, besides renting a car, is to use public transportation to get there. Please contact our concierge service, who will help you with any request you may have during your stay.

Bon appétit!

El Ateneo library, an unforgettable jewel

What can we learn about coral reef care in Cozumel?

What can we learn about coral reef care in Cozumel?

The coral reefs of Cozumel are one of the main tourist attractions of this Mexican island. The coral reef barrier grows and expands along the coastline of the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean, thanks to a bet for sustainability and the compatibility of tourism and fishing activities with environmental protection.

Around Cozumel Island is what is considered to be the second-largest barrier reef in the world. It consists of a total of 26 protected reef areas within the Great Mesoamerican Reef. Thanks to this, its popularity has increased, and yearly thousands of people arrive on its coasts to practice activities such as scuba diving.

A protected area since 1996

The coral reef of Cozumel, in Mexico, is composed of a total of more than 1,192 species of animals and plants. This means you could find algae, and fish, but also sponges, echinoderms, corals, and other endemic species typical of this area of the Mexican Caribbean.

Thanks to this great variety of species and the shallow waters, many visitors choose Cozumel every year as a destination for diving, and ecotourism and to enjoy environmentally sustainable tourism experiences. Accommodations such as Grand Park Royal Cozumel, with its All-Inclusive plan and privileged location on the island, have become a favorite among tourists looking to spend a few days in a protected environment where they can discover authentic natural wonders.

To make tourist activity and the protection of the coral reef compatible, the southwest zone of Cozumel was declared Cozumel National Park in 1996. Since then, many environmental initiatives have been carried out to protect the corals and prevent their extension from being reduced or affected by the tourism boom.

Clear waters, perfect for snorkeling.

In addition to a large number of plant and animal species and corals that inhabit these waters, we must also highlight the water's transparency in this area of the Caribbean Sea. The visibility of the water is one of the best in the world and you can see up to 200 feet all year round. This makes this area a dream for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.

To keep Cozumel's coral reef in perfect condition for future generations, there are always some tips and recommendations for visitors in the area, such as the following:

● Do not use sunscreens containing Oxybenzone, an ingredient that has proven to be harmful to corals and causes bleaching.
● Buy fish only from responsible companies and professional restaurants in the area to avoid overfishing damage to the marine environment.
● Consuming local products to favor the communities that live in and protect Cozumel National Park throughout the year.

The care of the corals on the island of Cozumel leaves a great lesson for all of us: the compatibility of responsible tourism activity with the protection of protected areas for their environmental wealth.
